Signal Achievements, Reprise 0

Emma and the crew discuss the increasingly obvious incompetence of the Trump maladministration, with a focus on “signalgate.” (Warning: Short promo at the end.)

Judicial Restraint Restraining the Judiciary 0

The EFF does not think much of Republicans’ latest strategy to help Donald Trump avoid legal defeats by hamstringing federal courts.

Here’s a bit of their article (emphasis added):

Earlier this week, the House Judiciary Committee passed H.R. 1526, a bill by Rep. Darrell Issa to prevent courts from issuing nationwide injunctions. This bill could receive a vote on the House floor as early as next week. Senator Josh Hawley recently introduced a similar bill in the Senate. Both bills would prohibit district courts from handing down injunctive relief orders that apply to parties that are not involved in the case.

EFF opposes both bills. We see this legislation for what it is: a transparent attempt to limit courts’ ability to act as an effective check on the Trump administration’s recent flood of illegal orders and actions – some of which EFF itself is challenging. Congress should firmly oppose any effort to prevent the judicial branch from fulfilling its constitutional duty.

Afterthought:

I guess Republicans’ idea is, if you can’t beat ’em, castrate ’em.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Yet another oxymoronic “responsible gun owner” performs a random act of politeness:

According to initial reports from Frisco police, no children were hurt when a “projectile came into the building from the exterior” at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Pete and Gracie Hosp Elementary on Lone Star Ranch Parkway.

Investigators said Thursday afternoon they found fragments believed to belong to a bullet and that, out of an abundance of caution, dismissed the students early for the day.

Disciples of Dumb 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Timmen L. Cermak argues that we are in the midst of a war on science. In light of, say, just to pick one example, the anti-VAX movement, which is willing to endanger endanger everyone’s health based on one discredited article, despite over two centuries of evidence that vaccines work, methinks he makes some good points.

Here’s a tiny bit:

Three origins of these attacks include the sheer ignorance that comes from a lack of education. For example, political leaders criticizing studies of “transgender mice” propagate misinformation, since these studies are actually of transgenic mice—those in which genetic material from other species has been inserted into their DNA, like the GMO foods that suffuse our diet. Attacks also stem from the typical short-sightedness of business-oriented leaders who value quarterly profits over investing in research and development needed to maintain market position over the next decade. And finally, ideologies that value transactional power tactics and loyalty tend to denigrate academic and bureaucratic experts as elites, who are viewed as obstacles to their “end justifies the means” philosophy.

It came to me today, as I was reading about this, that the reason the white right-wing is against DEI is right there in the words themselves.

The opposite of DEI is UIE: uniformity, inequality, and exclusion.
