Exit the vehicle, politely.

A 53-year-old Winchester man was killed in a gun accident Monday morning while he was deer hunting by himself.

. . . According to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig, Gene T. Robertson was shot and killed accidentally by his own gun while he was getting in or out of his vehicle.

And another gun that fires itself . . . .

Here’s a bit of good news (we all need some, however trivial):

People who drink three to five cups of coffee per day are less likely to die prematurely from some illnesses than those who don’t drink or drink less coffee, according to a new study. Drinkers of both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee saw benefits, including a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases, type 2 diabetes, and suicide.

Meta: Cleaned Up the Sidebar 0

Updated a few links, dropped Geekazine (it’s been five years since I blogged there and Jeffry is a really nice guy, but there are limits), and moved the This Week in Blackness link from the RSS feeds to the blogroll, as TWIB is now the Twibularity and a requires a subscription for full access.

It’s well-worth the subscription and I pay it quite happily. If you don’t want the subscription, there’s still excellent free content. You can listen to TWIB Prime at Balloon Juice.

Also drat. Didn’t realize I was showing the blogroll twice, as I spend most of my time in the back room.

And, no, there are no poker games in the back room. Now, if I could get a foursome for bridge, a game that doesn’t require betting to make it interesting . . . .

In the Guardian, Gayatri Devi suggests that persons who pound the Bible should take a break and read a bit of it. A snippet:

Those who remain oblivious to fundamentalist mission creep would also be missing out on the intellectually satisfying activity of scrutinizing the ways creationists take a mythical, thousands-year-old text and plaster it into a literal present. Are the beautiful hyperboles of biblical myths important and interesting to the literal readers of the Bible?

(snip)

Do fundamentalist readers hear the hope and humanity of the ark myth and connect it to the specter of poverty, suffering and degradation in the wastelands of our great nation? Or do they, like Bobby Jindal and Rick Perry, read natural disasters such as hurricane Katrina and the tornado in Joplin, Missouri, as God giving them the green signal for the Christian Right to take control of our government?

Daniel Ruth, in the midst of a larger discussion the relationship between Marco “Rube” Rubio and Jeb! makes this telling offhand observation (emphasis added):

Trump grasps what no one else quite understood: Bush has no clue how to fight back when he gets slapped around. He’s never had to.
