Yet another random act of politeness . . . .

The preliminary investigation revealed the (ten-year-old–ed.) boy and his mother were walking inside the park, possibly near the walking track, when the child felt pain and his mother realized he had been shot, Fitzgerald said.

(snip)

Police do not believe the boy or his mom were targeted.

“We think this possibly could have been the child was caught in the crossfire,” Fitzgerald said.

And it’s just another day in the NRA’s Paradise of Politeness.

In the NRA’s Garden or Bleedin’, children learn to play with politeness.

And thus passeth another child, sacrificed to the NRA’s idol of the portable phallus.

As we are so often reminded, a polite society is a clean society.

An EPD sergeant tells us that a man was unloading a gun to clean it when he accidentally shot a woman in the torso.

They go together like love and Cupid.
Let me tell you brother,
You can’t have one without the other.

Yet another “responsible gun owner” isn’t.

After the boy was flown to UT Medical Center, he was later transferred to Children’s Hospital before being released on Saturday, according to Johnson. . . .

According to statements made by the boy’s parents, it is believed that the boy’s father either placed or keeps a loaded handgun in a holster on top of the refrigerator in the kitchen, the DA said. The boy’s mother said the he evidently used a chair to climb up on the kitchen counter tops, and apparently reached on top of the refrigerator to get the gun, Johnson said.

And yet another headline writer demonstrates ignorance of the difference between “accidental” and “negligent.” (Yes, you’ll have to follow the link to see the headline.)

Another “responsible gun owner” practices a random act of politeness.

A 2-year-old girl was wounded in Severn Friday night after a bullet penetrated her home from outside, according to the Anne Arundel County Police Department. . . .

Yet another indication that “responsible gun owner” is a oxymoron:

A dumbfounded woman said blood suddenly started squirting from her chest in the middle of the night, and investigators linked it to a stray bullet that pierced her wall, according to a Virginia sheriff.

(snip)

“Upon further inspection of the scene, deputies noticed a bullet sized hole in the wall that directly lined up where the victim was standing in her kitchen. … Deputies began administering first aid as Fire and Rescue arrived on scene.” A suspect was discovered when deputies asked one of the neighbors if he heard any gunshots in the night. A 56-year-old man advised he had fired such a shot, while checking to see if a handgun was loaded, Decatur said.

Oh, my. Someone else gets it!

Thomas L. Knapp writes at The (Aiken, SC) News:

On any given day, my news feeds show me other stories of so-called “accidental shootings,” usually involving children and guns which are mishandled by, or left unattended by, their adult owners.

The phrase “accidental shooting” is usually a contradiction in terms. There are, in the normal course of events, only two kinds of shootings: Intentional and negligent.

An intentional shooting occurs when a competent individual intentionally loads, points, and fires a properly functioning firearm.

A negligent shooting occurs when a competent individual fails to do his or her job.

Follow the link for more of his thoughts on competence.

Aside:

As my two or three regular readers know, I agree with his reasoning. Police and press should stop routinely referring to shootings as “accidental.”

The other question, though, which Knapp does not address, is why so many whom Knapp would likely characterize as “incompetent” are able to caress portable phalluses so passionately.
