Another oxymoronic “responsible gun owner.” Another purse. Another gun.

Officers were dispatched to a local hospital Friday night about a 2-year-old gunshot victim. The child’s mother told officers there that her 3-year-old son found the gun in her purse after she left a bedroom, and he accidentally shot his younger sibling, who later died from his injury.

As Victoria Hugo-Vidal pointed out (see the second post below), this is us.

A broken society.

A Question of Identity 0

The Portland Press-Herald’s Victoria Hugo-Vidal reacts to the recent mass shooting in Maine. She writes powerfully of America’s unwillingness to act against the merchants of death. A snippet; follow the link for context.

Shortly after the massacres, Sen. Angus King said of Maine, “this is not who we are.” But it is.

The fact that this killing happened proves that this is who we are.

And another “responsible gun owner” discharges his responsibility . . . .

When police arrived, they found a four-year-old with a head injury being carried into an ambulance.

Authorities were able to find out that the grandfather had taken out his gun to practice at a shooting range earlier in the day. When he got home, he was cleaning the gun and a bullet had accidentally fired grazing the victim’s head.

Authorities responded to a 911 call reporting a gunshot inside the Walmart in Waverly around 11:12 a.m. When they got there, a woman reported to police that her 2-year-old son had gotten ahold of her Taurus 9mm firearm and accidentally discharged it, according to the Waverly Police Department.

One more time, “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.

She had politeness in the bag.

Miller, who was in the passenger seat of her 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, had a loaded Smith & Wesson 9 mm pistol in her purse. The group decided to leave the SUV, and she took it out to place on the center console “when the gun fired striking her boyfriend in the leg,” police said.

Incensed To Kill 0

Richard Lettieri, writing at Psychology Today Blogs, takes a look at what research to date tells about mass. He notes that the recent shooting in Maine “mass shooting of 2023, a year that has witnessed 565 such massacres as of this writing. That’s almost two such calamities per day.”

He goes on to look at qualities mass shooters tend to have in common and identifies six; follow the link for a detailed discussion of each one.

  • The majority of random mass murderers are white men (emphasis in the original–ed.), middle-aged or younger.
  • They have histories of mental health problems.
  • Chronic cynicism and brooding distrust are why mass murderers tend to be loners.
  • Ninety percent of future mass murderers had prior contact with the law.
  • The revenge motive is another animating force behind random mass murder.
  • They typically have a history of difficulty maintaining employment, and are frequently out of work at the time of the killings.

In my view, though, he failed to address perhaps the most significant characteristic, though, granted, it’s not a psychological one: the ready availability of weapons of war at your local store.

A “responsible gun owner” politely shows off his new acquisition.

The Abbeville County Sheriff’s Office said McMinn was shot by a family member as he was being shown a newly purchased gun.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society,” Reprise 0

Steve M. cites a column by Jamelle Bouie, in which Bouie argues forcefully that America’s gun culture poses not only a threat to other Americans (take a look at the numbers), but also to democracy. Steve M. points out that

But to the members of the gun community, the danger to democracy is a feature, not a bug. Gun absolutists don’t want to live in a society where people who disagree with them — on guns or on most other issues — wield enough power to enact laws they don’t like.

Methinks his post is worth a read.

Always be polite to your mother.

Craig (a family friend–ed.) says he told her he had bought a new gun and was wiping it down and checking out its features when it accidentally discharged.

“It was just a freak accident. It just went off and shot straight through the house,” she said. “He was in one end, and she was in another.”
