A 47-year-old woman was hospitalized Saturday morning after her son accidentally shot her in the parking lot of a local Walmart . . . .

According to Rio Grande City assistant police Chief Jose Solis, the woman was in a vehicle with her 21-year-old son and a third family member when the gun accidentally went off, shooting her in the back.

At Psychology Today Blogs, Danny Mulligan, Erica Marshall-Lee, and Desireé G. Frain lament our daily bloodbath of gun violience. Then they go on to posit that “. . . sensational media coverage not only rewards shooters with notoriety—it manufactures misleading and divisive narratives about gun violence.” They proceed to explore four myths that they believe said media coverage promotes:

• Myth 1: Mass shootings are a major driver of American gun violence
• Myth 2: Suicide is caused solely by the neurochemical imbalances that cause mental illness
• Myth 3: Gun violence is mainly caused by individuals with mental illness
• Myth 4: Gun violence can be explained by monocausal narratives

Over the weekend, Greer said she went to feed LeMon (her horse–ed.) but found a horrific scene instead.

Greer called her veterinarian to come over not knowing exactly what happened and that’s when they found a bullet hole.

According to Greer, neighbors heard a gunshot during the overnight hours.

She said LeMon was so friendly that he probably went right up to the shooter.

“All I could do was cry and scream,” Greer said. “It’s just evil.”

Waynesville (NC–ed) police said it was Saturday when a man walked into Clyde’s Restaurant. It was packed for dinner on a late Saturday afternoon. Chief David Adams said when the man, and the woman he was with, went to pay at the counter, the revolver he had in his pants pocket went off. The restaurant’s surveillance camera picked up the incident.

A 2-year-old died in the hospital after police say she “accidentally shot herself.”

Around 1 p.m. Tuesday, Hampton police went to the 500 block of Marcella Road after a call about a shooting, according to a recent press release. Officers found a 2-year-old suffering from a single gunshot wound, and she was taken to a local hospital. . . .

A DeLand woman was hit in the shoulder by a shot fired from outside her home Thursday night, according to police.

The lowest common denominator in all this is not, as one may wish to think, “mental illness,” or even, as seems more likely, the stupid.

It’s the guns.

Without the guns, the stupid and the “mentally ill” would be–how shall I put this?–much less dangerous.

Don’t get me wrong.

I’m not about banning guns.

But I’m certainly about controlling them.

The hunt for politeness bags yet more trophies.

We are a failing society of stupid.
