Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

Thom makes a case that Republicans and the NRA are quite willingly orchestrating a misdirection play about gunnuttery to obscure their true intentions.

America’s original sin of chattel slavery continues to cast its shadow.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gene Collier remarks on the confluence of guns and stupid.

Musical NotesGuns and stupid, guns and stupid,
They go together like love and Cupid.
Let me tell you, brother,
You won’t find one without the other.

Yet another oxymoronic “responsible gun owner” exposes a child to his politeness.

There’s a common denominator to all these injuries and deaths both accidental negligent and purposeful:

The gun.

That’s the one constant in gunnuttery.

Stemming the Red Tide, Reprise 0

To figure out why (mostly Republican) elected politicians refuse to take action against the flood of guns and gun violence, the Arizona Republic’s E. J. Montini follows the money.

The shooter was armed with a semiautomatic rifle, the weapon of choice for most of America’s mass killers.

It’s a weapon elected officials refuse to ban, because they love the money and the support provided by the gun lobby more than they love innocent civilians.

Or police officers.

Follow the link for his reasoning.

Once again, we are reminded that “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.

Stemming the Red Tide 0

Michael in Norfolk points a finger. Here’s a bit from his article:

Australia, New Zealand and dozens of other nations have shown how the carnage and needless deaths can be stopped or at least greatly limited. The only obstacle is today’s Republican Party’s gun worship and addiction to gun industry money.

A Modest Proposal 0

At The Roanoke Times, Karen Gilbert, who survived the mass shooting at Virginia Tech a decade and a half ago (how much more numb have have become since then?), offers a modest proposal for dealing with American’s red tide of gunnuttery. A snippet:

We need to finally learn from the many other countries around the world which have tackled this problem successfully or naver had the problem in the first place.

She is an optimist if she thinks that, as a society, we are willing to learn from others, especially as regards (some) Americans’ fervid fetish for portable phalluses.

After all, America is exceptional; just ask it.

Exceptional in that we can’t even learn from ourselves.

Why would we learn from others?

American Exceptionalism America’s Exception 0

Llewellyn King tries to understand (some) Americans’ fascination with portable phalluses. Here’s a bit from his article:

The blame rests primarily on something in American exceptionalism that loves guns. I mostly understand that; I like them, as I write from time to time. I also like fast cars, small airplanes, strong drinks and other hair-raising things. But society has said these need controls — from speed limits to flying instruction — and has severe penalties for mixing the first two with the last. Those controls make sense. We abide by them.

Regarding that other great national indulgence — guns — society has said safety doesn’t count.

I comment the entire piece to your attention.

He just had to show his politeness.

Yet more evidence that “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron, as if we needed it.

Police learned that the woman was in the home with her 11-year-old great-nephew. The boy showed her a gun and it went off, leaving the woman with a facial injury. The great-nephew left the home and police later found him in the 1800 block of East English, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Thus passeth another day in NRA Paradise.
