The Rule of Lawless 0

Susan Young, opinion editor of the Bangor Daily News, calls out the vacuous–nay, hypocritical and logic-free–rationale* of those Republicans who refuse to take action against the wave of gun violence. A snippet:

While many Americans, including the Bangor Daily News editorial board, have renewed their calls for tougher restrictions on guns and ammunition, those who oppose such moves are repeating the usual excuses for why such moves aren’t possible or won’t work.

“We’re not going to fix it,” Tennessee Republican U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett, said when asked about the shooting on Monday. “Criminals are going to be criminals.”

By that rationale, we shouldn’t have any laws at all.

Yet another responsible gun owner demonstrates the oxymoronic (emphasis on the “moronic”) nature of the phrase, “responsible gun owner.”

And, again, politeness becomes child’s play.

We are a failed society.

Roy Johnson sums it up:

Let’s just be truthful. Let’s look in the mirror and stop pretending. Look in the mirror and stop denying what we see. Look in the mirror and stop lying.

America, we love our guns more than we love our children.

Follow the link for his reasoning.

Methinks that. when he typed “A-m-e-r-i-c-a,” he missplet “R-e-p-u-b-l-i-c-a-n-s.”

Steven M. points out that, in a putative democracy, you get what you vote for. A snippet:

If you look at polling on guns, you’ll probably conclude that Americans are extremely dissatisfied with the nation’s gun laws.

(snip poll numbers)

But Americans don’t vote these beliefs. In every nationwide election, and in state and local elections everywhere except the bluest areas, a solid majority of white Americans vote Republican. They know that Republicans oppose virtually every measure that limits gun ownership, or that even creates a small speed bump before a gun can be purchased. But they vote GOP anyway.

It’s simple: If you want the gun laws to change, don’t vote Republican.

In his article, he’s focused on guns, but, natch, his argument can be extended to other issues.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society’ 0

Yet more evidence that “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron . . .

Two people were injured after a gun related incident at 3rd Bar in Seneca around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 25th.

(snip)

As information was gathered, it appears the gun shot was the result of an accidental discharge of the pistol, injuring both male and female patron.

. . . and yet another reminder that “accidental” and “negligent” do not carry the same meaning.

Backpackin’ politeness.

The day care center (in South Holland, Ill.–ed.) is closed Friday after a 9-year-old student coming for after-school care brought a gun in his backpack. According to officials, when the student set down his backpack, the gun inside went off.

We are a broken society.
