“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 2

If you desire to take exception to rules of the hostelry which hosts your overnight stay, do so with politeness.

We are a failed society.

The Superpower 0

In discussing yet another pointless, senseless, apparently motiveless shooting, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Tony Norman gets to the ultimate appeal of gunnuttery:

. . . pumping bullets into another human being is the only superpower a soulless person can wield.

Welcome visitors to our shores from abroad with our peculiarly American form of politeness.

Officers arrived to find a 31-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head, Kissell said. Dr. Matthew Willson of Chertsey, Surrey, England — an astrophysicist — was taken to a hospital but died from his injuries, police said. The case has been ruled a homicide.

“This incident appears to be a random act involving individuals participating in the reckless discharge of firearm(s) which led to the tragic death of Dr. Willson,” police said in an emailed statement. “Dr. Willson was in town from England visiting loved ones when the incident occurred.”

We are again reminded that politeness takes practice.

A Florida woman suffered a serious gunshot wound in her backyard after being hit by a bullet fired from a high-powered rifle from neighbors who were next door target shooting.

The story goes on to quote the local sheriff as saying that “target practice is not illegal” (those are the words in the report, not necessarily the sheriff’s exact words).

We are again confronted by one who knows not that “negligent” and “accidental” are not synonyms.

As we know, politeness takes practice.

One more time, “accidental” and “negligent” are not synonyms.

Don’t let politeness take a back seat.

Musical NotesGuns and stupid, guns and stupid,
They go together like love and Cupid.
Let me tell you, brother,
You won’t find one without the other.

A race to politeness.

There was recently a letter to the editor of my local rag arguing that guns don’t kill people, people kill people.

Funny how gun nuts always leave out the key modifier.

It’s people with guns that kill people.

Sure, people with knives and bricks and baseball bats and even corkscrews kill people too, but not nearly so many people, nor so quickly.

Shoot first, ask questions later.

In the eight-minute 911 call, Hairston’s mother told a dispatcher that her husband accidentally shot their daughter. The hysterical mother begged for an ambulance as a man in the background said repeatedly, “Breathe, baby.”

“My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was an intruder,” the mother said. “She was in our garage and my husband just didn’t know what was going on. Oh, my God.”

Thus passeth another day in NRA paradise.

We are a broken society.

Again, “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.
