It’s not much, but it’s something.

Britain’s second biggest payday lender has been ordered to refund £15.4m to 147,000 customers after regulators found it was lending more to borrowers than they could afford to repay.

The Money Shop and other brands run by Dollar Financial UK – Payday UK, Payday Express and Ladder Loans – handed out short-term loans charging interest rates as high as 2,962%.

The Climates They Are a-Changing 0

MarketWatch’s Paul B. Farrell unloads on Big Oil. A snippet:

Get out now, before Big Oil stocks really crash, big-time. Exxon Mobil’s CEO Rex Tillerson gets a $40 million salary. Along with the myopic bosses of the other major oil firms, Shell, Conoco, Chevron and BP, they all threw away massive future earnings for their shareholders, and likely each signed their company’s death warrants in what Foreign Policy, BusinessWeek, Science, the Economist, National Geographic and other journals are officially calling the “End of the Oil Age.”

Listen: “Exxon’s Own Research Confirmed Fossil Fuel’s Role in Global Warming Decades Ago,” screams an InsideClimateNews.org headline. Environmental activist Bill McKibben’s op-ed in the Guardian news was brutal, calling Exxon Mobil’s secret decades-long campaign as a turncoat climate-science denier an “unparalleled evil.”

And the Department of Justice attorney who successfully sued Big Tobacco says America should sue Big Oil on racketeering charges, a fraud against investors as well as the public, covering up their own research and hiring goons to undermine other legitimate research, such as the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The Supplement Scam 0

Josh Bloom explains. Here’s a bit:

Since, by any measure, herbal supplements are intended to treat or prevent disease—something that is beyond obvious from the labels—it is reasonable to ask how this giant industry is selling drugs, the vast majority of which have never been tested, let alone even come close to the standards set by the FDA for approval of a new drug.

The industry is able to bypass the aegis of the FDA simply by using slippery language on their labels.

Plane Truths 0

I just visited a newspaper website (no I won’t say which one; it doesn’t matter) to be greeted by a big ad saying “The F35B Is Ready for Deployment!”

No, it’s not.

Industrial Revelation 0

The real story is in the aside (emphasis added).

The Pentagon has placed restrictions on the University of Phoenix’s recruiting of new students from the armed forces as authorities investigate whether the school violated restrictions on marketing itself on military bases. The move is the latest blow to the for-profit college industry.

“College” is now an “industry.” It’s biggest product, it appears, is penury.

The Privatization Scam 0

It always works out so well.

The company hired to place substitute teachers in Philadelphia was supposed to improve its lagging performance and fill half of all daily vacancies by Friday.

But Source4Teachers fell short, again, finding educators for just 19 percent of classrooms missing their teachers Friday. The day before: 22 percent.

The company has never come close to the 75 percent it promised the Philadelphia School District by the first day of classes when it signed its $34 million contract.

If you understand that there is such a thing as the public good, you realize that private gain is inimical to it.

Psychiatrist Julie Holland points out that that fellow lurking on the street corner is a small fry. Here’s a snippet:

It’s getting harder to remain unmedicated in the Altered States of America. Street drugs, speed and heroin, have come in, out of the cold, and are now Adderall or Vyvanse, OxyContin or Zohydro as Big Pharma expands into the recreational market.
