You can’t condemn a company for responding logically to economic conditions that you yourself created. Not unless you’re Donald Trump, and the company is Harley-Davidson.

The Slosh of the Slush 0

Mike discusses New York state’s lawsuit alleging that the Trump Foundation was for all practical purposes a slush fund used for various illegal purposes, including Trump’s political campaign. He is skeptical that the suit will do anything to erode Trump’s support among what Bob Cesca refers to as “the Red Hats.”

Warning: Language.

It seems that most of the waiting rooms I visit–the ones with televisions, that is–have reached a consensus that HGTV is the least offensive channel to set their TV dials to (remember dials?). Accordingly, I see far more home renovation and house flipping shows than I would willingly submit to.

I have, however, seen enough that I found this New York Times article on real-life house flippers and how their experiences differ from the HGTV narratives an interesting read.

It illustrates again that “reality TV” and reality are in no way related, just as “Fox” and “News” ar–oh, never mind.

When Isaac Asimov* conceived the Foundation Trilogy, I doubt he imagined a foundation as venal as this one.

The Pusher Men 0

At The Roanoke Times, Nancy Liebrecht points out the pharmaceutical companies who pushed opioid sales had allies. Here’s a bit from her column:

The opioid crisis is a horrific tragedy, and drug companies must be held accountable for their duplicity, but Republican legislators who have consistently voted to deny ordinary people access to needed health care while giving the wealthy buckets more cash bear some responsibility, too. Using a huge federal deficit that their party created, Republicans such as Misters Campbell and Chafin have argued that Virginia cannot afford expanding Medicaid thus leaving few options for poor Virginians who suffer chronic pain. This, however, is what the modern Republican Party has become. By serving the desires of their wealthy donors first, they create a situation where they perceive no choice but to cut benefits and services for everybody else. It is an extraordinarily cynical MO.

The Grift in the Gift 0

Josh Marshall thinks he has figured out the “White House Gift Shop,” recently in the news in relation to the Trumpled North Korean summit “commemorative coin.”* A snippet:

Thanks to a number of emailers but particularly TPM Reader JB, I think I now have the answer. There was once an actual ‘White House Gift Shop’ in the basement of the Old Executive Office Building. But the current ‘The White House Gift Shop’ is a private for profit company which has no connection to the White House or the Secret Service or any other government entity, despite that fact that it seems to go to some lengths to give the impression that it does.

“That Toddlin’ Town” 0

Josh Marshall muses on the relationship between Donald Trump’s history in the New York real estate market and his behavior as President. A snippet:

New York City is a liberal city, probably the most progressive big city in the country, as far as it goes. Yet its power structure, its money class includes a whole community of people with extreme wealth who live in a culture in which predation and acquisition is the norm.

It’s a long, thoughtful piece that is well worth a look.
