“A Calvacade of Kleptocracy” 0

In related news, Nick Mills is also concerned about the integrity of the press.

In 2003, after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, I went to Baghdad as a potential contractor to assess the needs of the Iraqi media. With other contractors hopeful of landing a fat U.S. government contract, I visited radio and television stations and newspaper offices. At the office of one newspaper editor, we were shown into a back room. The editor pointed to a large hook protruding from the ceiling. “That,” he said, “is where Uday [Saddam Hussein’s eldest son] would hang us up by the wrists and lecture us on what we had published.”

(snip)

A free press is the target of dictators, despots and demagogues all over the world. It is possible to be a journalist in a country without a free press, but it’s a dangerous profession. It is not possible for a country without a free press to be a democracy.

How Stuff Works, Banking Today Dept. 0

Rat: We can't make this stuff up. The Stuff: Banker says, Well, sir, no load for you. We have to be very careful under all these banking regulations. Man: But aren't you the same bank whose employees opened two million fake accounts to charge customers fake fees? Banker: Yes, but we fired those bad apples. Man: But was there someone above those bad apples? Banker: Yes, sir. She's retiring. Man Retiring. Banker: With a $124, 000,000 payout. Man: So you collect fake fees from customers, fire the employees you pressured, and keep all the millions for yourself? Bankeer: Yes, but if you feel strongly about it, you should talk to your congressman. Man: Where is he? Banker: With our CEO. (Image: CEO and Congressman in hot tub together throwing money about.) Goat: Where does it all end? Rat: I'm hoping for mobs and pitchforks. Pig (dressed for battle and carrying a pitchfork): Just tell me who to poke.

Everybody Must Get Fracked 1

Farron rips on President Obama for not doing anything about fracking. He may have a point, but given the Congress of the last six years, it’s a very small one.

“Sharing” works both ways.

A Las Vegas man who rented his house out through Airbnb is facing criminal charges after Metro Police allege he used “spy” cameras hidden in bedroom smoke detectors to record guests without their knowledge.

A District Court grand jury last week indicted the homeowner, Christopher Gregory Rogers, on five counts of capturing an image of the private area of another person, a gross misdemeanor, court records show.

I’m not sure that I agree with his blanket condemnation of the U. S. Department of Justice, but it is certainly true that too often it is the whistleblower, not the whistleblowee, who suffers.

Teflon Titans 0

At The Roanoke Times, T. Michael Maher wonders how a three-piece suit became teflon armor. A snippet:

Get out of Jail free cardHow did bank CEO’s become seemingly untouchable for the fraudulent behavior committed under their watch anyway? Where does that free pass come from? Maybe it’s the people who actually write or influence our laws. Congressional office staff and staff attorneys usually draft the statutes with input gladly provided by lobbyists and their attorneys. Campaign contributions get some political attention, but just in case I’ll work on that bill while you continue campaigning.

Am I daft to think persons with obvious financial conflicts of interest should not be influencing and/or writing the laws designed to regulate that very activity? It seems to have an appearance of impropriety, especially with how often we see this type of behavior. You don’t want the wolf writing rules for the sheep’s pen.

Sugar-Coating 0

David Singerman looks at the recent JAMA article revealing the sugar industry’s machinations to manipulate the nation’s masticators. A snippet:

Looking back at the industry’s transformation of sugar (an edible substance derived from a plant) into sucrose (a molecule), we also see the roots of “nutritionism” in United States policy. That’s the idea that what matters to human health is not food per se but rather a handful of isolable biochemical factors. As food critics like Michael Pollan and Marion Nestle have argued, nutritionism is better at helping processed-food companies market their products as healthy (“with Omega-3 added!”) than it is at promoting our well-being.
