“History Does Not Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes”* 0

Now it is Kimball Shinkoskey, writing at the Las Vegas Sun, who hears a rhyme.

She is responding to “Face the Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan’s statement on May 26 that “spreading lies about elections is free speech.” Here’s a bit of what she has to say:

America has arrived at the point Lenin took Russia to during the communist revolution there. Lenin said mischief in public speech was patriotic, because “Lying is justified by our objectives.” His objective was to overthrow the government there, and the objective of a certain political faction is to overthrow our traditional form of government here as well.

A Notion of Immigrants 0

At the Idaho State Journal, Nick Geir attacks a full ennead of Donald Trump’s lies about events that the U. S.-Mexico border with a most starting weapon: actual data.

Here’s one lies he dissects (emphasis in the original):

83% appear for asylum hearings

Trump pulls yet another figure out of the air: he asserts that only 3% of those who claim asylum show up for their court hearings. I’ve looked at several studies and the number of asylum seekers who do report ranges from 83% to 92%. It is essential to note that migrants who report to authorities are not, under the 1980 Refugee Act, illegal aliens.

True Believers 0

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Adriana E. Ramírez offers a theory as to why Donald Trump and his dupes, symps, and fellow travelers refuse to accept reality, specifically that he lost the 2020 election fair and square. Here’s a bit:

But for the people who believe that the election was stolen, there’s something else at stake. If Mr. Trump is wrong about this, it opens up their entire worldview to the possibility that he is (and, in turn, they are) wrong about other things — and that’s earth-shattering.

Lies and Lying Liars 0

Thom debunks the latest right-wing nutbag conspiracy theory, the one that the FBI intended to kill Donald Trump when they raided Mar-a-Lago. Here’s a quote from his comments:

This is all over Fox News. It is all over right-wing hate radio. Lies are like air to them. They just live and breathe lies.

Aside:

Underlying and powering this is America’s original sin of chattel slavery and the doctrine of racism that was fabricated to justify it.

America’s original sin continues to exact its toll.

Red Scare Redux 0

At the Tampa Bay Times, Daniel Ruth takes issue with Senator Rick Scott’s use of the phrase, “the free state of Florida” in a series of ads raising that spectre of Commies and socialists are coming Florida’s way. Here’s a tiny bit of Ruth’s article:

Scott’s manifesto noted those socialists and assorted reds need to know: “We’re the free state of Florida.” And indeed we are — unless you want to read a book, or get an abortion, or enroll your child in a Medicaid program, or love whomever you wish, or feel safe walking down the street without bumping into some Florida man with a gun, or believe in diversity, equality and inclusion, or want to learn more about critical race theory, or perhaps enjoy your constitutional First Amendment rights, which include expressing socialist and communist view points.
