Misdirection Played Out 0

The writer of a letter to the editor of the Portland Press-Herald says it’s time to close the lid on the Republicans’ farcical flap over Hunter Biden’s much-storied maybe-mythical laptop.

The Lake Effect 0

The Arizona Republic’s Laurie Metcalf has a belated Christmas wish–sadly, one which she despairs of coming about.

This being Christmas, it would seem a good time for Kari Lake to offer the state of Arizona a gift.

After 46 days of decrying her loss and defaming the state’s election workers, Lake should muster the grace to accept the verdict of the judge and concede the governor’s race.

GOP Goes a-Gaslighting 0

University of Maine political science professor Amy Fried reads the tea leaves and looks into the future:

Meanwhile in Congress, Republicans will be gaslighting and generating chaos in two ways.

One, they’ll probably try to obstruct normal governance by trying to coerce President Joe Biden to cut Social Security and Medicare, two incredibly effective and popular policies.

(snip)

Second, House Republicans are ready to take up a good deal of time with phony scandals — a clear contrast with their pre-election focus on inflation and the economy.

A Notion of Immigrants, 0

Thom suggests that Republicans are trading on a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Afterthought:

Methinks Thom is onto something.

I doubt that this is some sort of conservative conspiracy. Frankly, I don’t think the American right is capable of thinking that far ahead. (Indeed, their preference is to look back, not forward.)

Nevertheless, given the pervasiveness of “social” media (and I think Americans tend to forget that other countries have are plagued by it too), I think he makes a strong case that one society’s rhetoric could affect other societies’ perception of reality.

Vaccine Nation 0

The writer of a letter to the editor of the New Orleans Advocate argues forcefully that anti-VAXXers do not have the right to endanger the populace. Here’s a bit:

The value of vaccines in reducing the deaths of U.S. citizens in a major way is not a debatable issue, if one is concerned with the truth. And Republicans’ right to purposeful ignorance about simple public health measures should not include the right to expose our communities to many extra deaths.

The Lake Effect 0

The lake appears to be receding.

Apparently, Kari Lake’s attorneys didn’t do their homework.

Aside:

For some fool reason, I got a fund-raising letter from Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk’s outfit. It included a postage-paid reply envelope. I was tempted to reply . . . .

Clearly, they don’t do research good.

The Real Groomers 2

In looking at the results of Arizona’s elections, the Arizona Republic’s Laurie Roberts identifies the real groowmers. A snippet:

. . . Republicans have spent the last two years grooming their supporters not to trust anything that election workers say or do.

I have had neighbors who worked the polls on election day.

It’s a grueling long day that starts before dawn and doesn’t end until the votes are counted.

They did it because they cared about the country and they cared about democracy, and they tried to do it right. If they are paid at all, the pay is de minimis.

They certainly don’t deserve to be reviled and abused by a bunch of whiny sore losers whose ultimate motivations, when you dig through the layers of gibberish and obfuscation, are racism and bigotry and hatred.
