Gerry Mander, and His Entire Staff 0

Down in Florida, the League of Women Voters has instituted a nifty little suit regarding the machinations behind Florida’s recent redistricting. Much of the decisions were made in secret, and the League wants the records made public because, well, they concerned the people’s business.

Scott Maxwell reports that the trial is not going so well for the pols. A nugget:

Legislators have been accused of violating the Fair Districts amendment by using politics and partisanship to draw the state’s congressional and legislative districts.

Anyone with one good eye could already see they had pulled off a scam. Instead of sensible districts that follow geographic boundaries and keep communities intact, legislators drew snake-like districts that slither through as many as eight counties.

But now we have gobs of witnesses, evidence and testimony to prove it.

Follow the link for his summary of the evidence so far.

Truth and Truthers 0

The fellow who stole memorial signs from playgrounds honoring the dead in the Sandy Hook school shootings and who also claimed that the killings were a hoax and never happened has been apprehended, thanks in large part to Chez Pazienda and The Daily Banter.

He is not alone in his trutherism (sp?), in his ability to disavow facts because he doesn’t like them.

You realize, of course, such people are nuts.

Realize also that considerable resources, including

  • Fox News,
  • the wingnut thinktank complex,
  • ALEC,
  • the New York Times as long as it keeps hacks like Ross Douthat and David Brooks on its payroll,
  • the “main stream media” as long as it gives Cal Thomas, Charles Krauthammer, Megan McArdle, Christine Flowers, and their like paychecks (Google them yourselves–I’m not providing links), and
  • the rest of the “vast rightwing conspiracy” (for naming which Hillary Clinton was mercilessly reviled, but which exists nonetheless–too sophisticated to meet in smoke-filled rooms, but meeting the essential definition of “conspiracy,” that is, “coordinated”) .

are devoted to nurturing their nuttiness so as to undermine our polity.

Both sides don’t do it, and, until and unless the media stop pretending that they do, we will continue to be doomed.

Yes, I’m fed up. My country is being sold down the river (you will pardon the expression but it is most apt) and no one is paying attention.

The Tunes They Are a-Changing . . . 0

. . . and the Booman suspects he knows why (emphasis added):

Jonathan Chait wants to know why it is suddenly so popular for Republicans to tell the public that they are not scientists and therefore are unqualified to have an opinion about whether or not climate change is actually occurring. It’s because they lack even an iota of moral courage. It’s because they are paid liars. This is not complicated and it shouldn’t even be debatable. Outside of a very small handful of genuine dunces who actually managed to get elected despite having personal beliefs about science that would make John Calvin blush, every single Republican who is either denying climate change or saying that they can’t make up their mind about it is actually just being dishonest. For money and career.

In related news, Bill Maxwell totals the cost of denialism.

Eugene Kane tries to figure out the Republican fascination for Benghazi and hits on something (much more at the link):

Republicans will tell you the public demands new Benghazi hearings, but much of the public that they speak about probably would be hard-pressed to find Libya on a map. The deaths of four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador, also often are cited as the main reason for continued focus. But if you ask people to name the four victims, it’s likely many won’t be able to.

The people who have called for the new hearings on Benghazi are often woefully short on facts or even concrete ideas about what the hearings are supposed to be looking for, but they do know Hillary Clinton was secretary of state and President Barack Obama was somehow involved in the loop of information.

For this crowd, that’s all that’s necessary.

In other words, when you got nothing, make something up. Benghazi is the something of the moment.

This Is Your Brain on Rove 0

PoliticalProf explains how this works:

      1. political figure makes absurd claim about an opponent/policy;
      2. partisans respond, defending or the denying the claim according to their ideologies;
      3. the focus rapidly turns onto the person or policy against whom the original charge was made: the person or policy has to “prove” it does not do/say what the accuser claims;
      4. the firestorm cools down until new charge X is made and the cycle repeats.

Video moved below the fold because it autoplays on some systems.

I have not mentioned the melting of the West Antarctica ice sheet because I kept thinking, really, what else is there to say? Soon, probably not within my lifetime, but soon, Pine View Farm and its environs–and Virginia Beach, for that matter–will be all gone because of greed and inertia.

Shaun Mullen answered my question today. Just read it.
