The Rule of Lawless 0

The Arizona Republic’s E. J. Montini comments on Kari Lake’s fawning unwavering support of Donald Trump. A snippet:

Like all of Trump’s sycophants, including U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and pretty much every Republican in Congress, Lake seems to believe that the new rule in America is that no one is above the law . . . except Trump.

Elon Musk: Welcome everyone. I've been asked to chair this meeting of the President's secret task force on moving fast and breaking America. I'm sure you're all familiar with the carnage I'll be leaving behind soon. So--what have you broken recently? RFK Jr.: On, this is easy. I'm gutting public health like it's a bear I found in the road. My policies on vaccination and contagious disease are gonna kill so many people. Musk: Excellent. Keep up the terrible work, Bobby. Pam Bondi: I've been absolutely slandering that guy we accidentally sent to Cecot, mocking the very concept of justice. Due process can kiss my ass. Musk: An admirable lack of shame and decency, Pam. You are making sociopathy great again! Pete Hegseth: I've created chaos at the Pentagon and I've been caught texting secret war plans to civilians--twice! I'm actually livestreaming this meeting to my dentist. Musk: If anyone in the room was up to the job, Pete, it was definitely you. J. C. Vance: I've alienated friend and foe alike. Also, I met the Pope, then he, uh, died. Musk: You know, J. C. even I think you're weird. Now, before we adjourn, what have you got for us, Mr. President? Trump: What? Oh. One word, Leon. Massive, unpredictable tariffs. I'm gonna tank the global economy before this thing is over. Vance: Sir, you are an inspiration to us all. Trump to Vance: Who are you, again? Kash Patel: Sorry I'm late, I had to have a bothersome judge arrested. Musk: Kash, I knew you'd deliver the goods.

“History Does Not Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes’* 0

From the Washington Monthly:

A newly elected Republican chief executive, backed by a cadre of right-wing economists and think tanks, rides a populist wave to victory. Despite inheriting a relatively healthy economy, he unleashes a radical economic policy agenda and defunds government agencies, promising that his actions will usher in a new era of prosperity.

Instead, the economy slows. Budgets collapse. Investors are spooked. Core services erode. Even allies defect. By the end, voters—many of whom once cheered the project—recoil . . . .

No, Nate Weisberg is not talking about Donald Trump in that passage. Rather, he’s hearing a rhyme from a decade ago. Follow the link to find out who he refers to.

Robert Reich argues that, in these Trumpled times, truth is in peril. Here’s a bit of his column:

If the Trump regime can dictate what the universities of America teach or research or publish, or what students can learn or say, no university is safe.

Not even the truth is safe.

Michael in Norfolk hears a rhyme. Here’s a bit; follow the link for context.

Add in Hitler’s claims to justify seizing parts of neighboring nations (the need for resources and space) which sound like the Felon’s demands that Denmark hand over Greenland to America and the parallels become even more stark.

Dump the Facts, Ma’am 0

Rebecca Watson reports on a recent study that indicates conservatives dislike, distrust, and disbelieve science. Here’s a bit from her article:

But this study showed that the Republican plan to politicize all of science has had even greater success than anyone thought, because conservatives don’t even trust the science that does conform to their worldview. In a survey of nearly 8,000 Americans, conservatives distrusted all 35 different scientific professions they were asked about, including fields like industrial chemistry, because now, after decades of propaganda, they believe that all of science is a “leftist hobby” and that universities are havens of leftwing bias.

Methinks the findings of this study shed some light on the Trump madladministration’s efforts to gut federal scientific research programs.

“History Does Not Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes”* 0

At the Detroit Free Press, John Lindstrom hears a rhyme. Here’s a bit of the cadence:

. . . the Trump administration has resurrected one of the great instruments of tyranny: “lettres de cachet,” an order from the king, usually used to order someone’s imprisonment. Such “lettres” were among the many issues causing the French Revolution. They historically stemmed from the concept of “Rex solutas est a legibus,” or the “King is released from the law” and able to do whatsoever he ? or she ? chooses. You didn’t like someone, didn’t matter why, the king would issue an order for your arrest.

Clearly Trump is behaving as though he is above the law . . . .
