Inquiring minds don’t really want to know, but now they do.

Republican Thought Police 0

The EFF looks the latest Republican strategy to squelch dissent: To give the executive branch power to unilaterally strip the tax exempt status from organizations it doesn’t like by dubbing them “terrorist supporting organizations.” Here’s a bit from their article (emphasis added):

The goal of this proposal is not to stop the spread of or support for terrorism; the U.S. already has myriad other laws that do that, including existing tax code section 501(p), which allows the government to revoke the tax status of designated “Terrorist Organizations.” Instead, this proposal is designed to inhibit free speech by discouraging nonprofits from working with and advocating on behalf of disadvantaged individuals and groups, like Venezuelans or Palestinians, who may be associated, even completely incidentally, with any group the U.S. deems a terrorist organization. And depending on what future groups this administration decides to label as terrorist organizations, it could also threaten those advocating for racial justice, LGBTQ rights, immigrant communities, climate action, human rights, and other issues opposed by this administration.

The Storms This Time 0

Thom wonders why the Trump maladministration is gutting the federal agencies that exist to keep Americans safe, such as NOAA. From the Youtube page:

Trump, Elon Musk & DOGE are gutting the programs scientists use to predict the weather, now Americans are in danger of dangerous storms, fossil fuel companies and oligarchs can hide information from the public and the billionaires will be able to buy property cheap after hurricanes wipe communities off the map.

PoliticalProf has more relevant to this topic.

Afterthought:

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that today’s Republican Party is no longer committed to promoting the general welfare.

The Entitlement Society 0

F. Scott Fitzgerald is often quoted as having said, “The rich are different than you and me.”

At Psychology Today Blogs, Ronald E. Riggio argues that this is indeed the case labels it “Affluency Syndrome.” He goes on to argue that

Rich and powerful people are prone to affluency and can believe that they are above the law.

Follow the link for his reasoning. Then just look around.

Methinks he makes a pretty strong case.

A Tune for the Times 0

From the Youtube page:

Sweet Caroline now has new lyrics especially for the orange menace, Donald Trump.

Maybe you’re like me and this revulsion of him comes in stages. I’ve disliked him since The Apprentice, knowing he was a shady character before then. Then, when I saw how his response to COVID, that dislike turned into disgust, which has only grown as I’ve seen his narcissism, treatment of women, people in general, corruption, idiocy and utter contempt for anything that doesn’t either stroke his ego or line his pockets.

When he became president again, this was joined by a deep sadness, because I saw so many seem to love the guy, and I know so so many more will be hurt by him being in the role. It still makes me mourn for society. We could be so much better than this.

Now I’m angry AND not wanting to give him or anyone on his team the satisfaction of seeing people like me feeling beaten. Normally, I’d like to think I’m not a person who insults or is mean to others. But gloves off for this guy. He deserves all the ridicule he can get because he’s a narcissist and hates that not everyone worships the ground he walks on.

So that’s the card I’m playing for this song. I want to sing it triumphantly, jabbing and mocking him. If any of you are rally-goers, hey, this might become an anthem you want to sing together at them. At any rate, it felt good to write, good to sing, and it would be the BEST if it could reach that idiot’s ears and rattle his ego. That’s my hope anyway! Get ready for a karaoke-ish track and SING ALONG!
