The Dialectic of Republicanism 0

Catherine Rampell comments. A snippet:

It’s almost funny, in a twisted sort of way. Election after election, Republicans have based their core political appeal on fear.

And yet —- as dual gun massacres this weekend starkly illustrate —- they refuse to offer solutions to any of the mortal threats Americans actually face.

Tutorials of Toxicity, Reprise 0

Charles Blow finds the lessons that Donald Trump is teaching through his behavior to be troubling (to put it mildly). Here are some of the lessons Blow sees:

He is teaching our children that there is no absolute truth; there is “alternative fact.” It’s not what you say but how you say it and how vociferously you can defend it.

He is teaching little boys that women’s bodies exist as playgrounds for privileged men and that there is no price to be paid if you are popular enough or rich enough.

He is teaching little girls that if they are ever victims of sexual assault by a popular, wealthy boy and deign to reveal it, they will likely come under withering verbal assault.

Twisted Figures 0

The Inky looks at how Pennsylvania Republicans are using incarceration as a tactic for gerrymandering. Here’s a bit:

By counting prisoners as living in their prisons and not at their home addresses, Pennsylvania’s system for drawing political maps benefits white, rural voters at the expense of voters in urban areas, disproportionately affecting people of color, experts say.

The story goes on to discuss efforts–uphill efforts to be sure–to end this practice.
