In a Pencesive Mood 0

Timothy Egan is not impressed by Vice President Pence’s conduct during his tenure in office.

The big problem with Pence is the vast empty space between his ears and the articulation of thoughts formed in that space. His biblical bromides make Ned Flanders of “The Simpsons” sound like Voltaire. And because his mind is closed to rational thought outside his theocratic construct, everything he says comes out like platitudinous mush.

(snip)

Pence’s response ( to the recent gun massacre in Texas–ed.) “We grieve with you and stand with resolve against evil,” he said. I’ll grant him the grieving part. But the resolve has translated into squat. His best solution to the scourge of mass killings, as he told heartbroken families in Texas, is more prayer.

Dick Polman has more on the Republican Party’s perverse response to purported perversion. A nugget:

But the problem is that the GOP, which once prided itself as the party of high moral character, keeps sinking lower. And the GOP is a fractious party, evidenced anew by its clashing responses to the Moore story. While most senators have embraced the “if true” talking point (which gives Moore plenty of wiggle room to deny and dig in), the Alabama branch of the GOP is basically saying that even if Moore did do what he says he didn’t do, that would be just fine with them.

Why? Because they say the Bible says so.

Let the Massacres Continue 0

Daniel Ruth excoriates the response of Donald Trump and many others to the most recent American gun massacre. If his column sounds kind of tired, the words “most recent” in the preceding sentence may give you a hint as to why. Here’s a snippet (emphasis added):

Trump dismissed the Sutherland Springs tragedy as the perverse handiwork of an individual with “mental health” issues. “This isn’t a guns situation,” the president of the United States said before resuming his thoughts and prayers.

Even more bizarrely, Trump expressed astonishment that a gunman could enter a church in rural Texas and kill 26 people. “Who would think a thing like this could ever happen?” he wondered.

To answer Trump’s question there in second paragraph, anyone who pays freaking attention to the headlines, for Pete’s sake.

This is the very picture of weaponized imbecility.

Paul Krugman has the details. Here’s a nugget:

But I guess this is what you have to expect when you hand over the reins of power to a con man, whose whole career has been based on convincing naïve marks that he’s a brilliant deal maker, but turns out to have no idea how to actually govern.

Oh, wait — did you think I was talking about Donald Trump? I’m talking about Paul Ryan, the speaker of the House, an obvious phony who nonetheless convinced the rubes — that is, much of the news media and the political establishment — that he was a brilliant fiscal expert. What we’re witnessing now is the end of the charade, the political equivalent of what happened when graduates of Trump University tried to get some value in return for their money.

AWOL 0

Brian Greenspun, publisher of the Las Vegas Sun, remarks on the timidity and perfidy of those few Republicans who have dared protest the Trumpling of the Republican Party. He speaks directly of Senators Flack and Corker A nugget:

To avoid the messy losses come Election Day — it is called being primaried from the far right — these “moderate Republicans” are opting out. They are leaving the field of political battle and the unhealthy discourse to others.

OK, that would be fine I suppose in another world. But in Trump’s world, when the people who profess a modicum of sanity are forced out of the asylum, that leaves the certifiable ones in charge.

Double Jeopardy 0

Solomon Jones sees a tell in how Trump has responded to Myeshia Johnson, the pregnant widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, one of the soldiers who fell in Niger. A snippet (emphasis added).

Almost immediately, the president of the United States took to Twitter to call her a liar (for reporting that Trump had said that her husband “knew what he signed up for”–ed.). In doing so, Donald Trump dragged us all into the abyss of hypocrisy that has made his presidency both spectacle and debacle. And he proved once again that he reserves his ugliest behavior for women and people of color.

Myeshia Johnson is both. Therefore, it seems, she is unworthy of the respect that Trump afforded Navy widow Carryn Owens when Trump led Congress in two minutes of applause for Owens during his State of the Union address.
