Nixon Redux 0

Richard Nixon once said, “. . . when the president does it, that means it is not illegal.”* Shaun Mullen explains.

There is one overwhelming difference between Donald Trump and Richard Nixon.

Nixon was smart.

Root Causes 2

Werner Herzog’s Bear cuts to the quick of today’s Republican Party. Here’s the gist; follow the link for the rest.

At base in all of these cases the issue is that one of our political parties is merely the vehicle for an extremist ideology that will stop at nothing to grab political power by any means necessary. This ideology is also not supported by a majority of Americans, which is why this party suppresses the vote, gerrymanders, harnesses gushers of dark money, and puts its support behind a nationalist demagogue who promises “jobs” while passing all the cuts to taxes and health care that they want.

Meet the Voter Fraudster 0

It’s not who they said it is.

A Las Vegas man is accused of illegally paying a woman to improperly register Republican voters in a rural Nevada town ahead of the GOP primary election last year, authorities said Friday.

(snip)

Zority’s indictment alleges that from April to June 2016 he provided Parks with Wal-Mart gift cards and cash based on the number of Republican voters she signed up; that he failed to put his name on a duplicate registration form; and that he directed Parks not to put her name on registration copies.

The criminal complaint in Parks’ case said she was working for Engage Nevada, a conservative voter registration group, when she marked “Republican” or “nonpartisan” on forms of people who said they were Democrats or didn’t specify their party affiliation.

Republican charges of voter fraud are what is known in psychological circles as “projection.”

I’m old. I thought that nothing could surprise me, but, clearly, the Republican Party is determined to disabuse me of that notion.

Today’s Republican Party is a vile and loathsome thing.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

That the police are far more likely to arrest Not White than white persons on drug charges, even though the rate of drug use is pretty much the same amongst the various populations, is extensively documented.

Consequently, if you don’t realize that this is all about locking up as many Not White persons as possible, then you haven’t been paying attention.

“Don’t Get Sick. If You Do Get Sick, Die Quickly” 0

Robert Reich excoriates Paul Ryans “they call it a health care” bill. A snippet:

America has the only health care system in the world designed to avoid sick people. Private for-profit health insurers spend millions of dollars to market themselves to healthy people because that’s where the profits are. They also make every effort to avoid sick people, because that’s where the costs are.

The Rule of Claw 0

Elie Mystall explains why those who are talking about a special prosecutor to investigate the firing of James Comey are telling themselves fairy tales. The whole piece is a gem and picking a snippet is difficult, but I managed to do so.

Of course, Congress is controlled by Republicans and Republicans have been playing the “there are no rules” game since America had the audacity to put a black man in charge. Mitch McConnell decided that black presidents only get to president for seven years, instead of eight, and won. “Deficit hawk” Paul Ryan passed a health care bill that will explode the deficit, and made people vote on it before they could read it and score it, and won. Everything that has happened in America over the past few years tells Congressional Republicans that they “win” when they simply ignore the “norms” of American governance.

You think they’ll change now? Why? WHY DO YOU THINK THAT?.

In relate news, Badtux sees a pattern:

This makes the third person in a row who was investigating Trump Administration connections to Russia who was fired.

Mutual Assistance Pact 0

You may recall that, in the dim dark past of about a year ago, many Republican regulars were skeptical of Donald Trump’s campaign and even of his competence.

No more. Now they appear to be all in for Trump.

Werner Herzog’s Bear explains why. Here’s a nugget; follow the link for the whole article:

The Republicans need Trump to rubber stamp their horrible agenda, from destroying health care to ripping apart environmental legislation. Trump needs the Republicans to cover for this grifting.

The Doctor Is In(censed) 0

In The Charlotte Observer, a North Carolina physician unloads on the AHCA (that is, Trumpcare). A snippet:

As a retired pediatrician, I am frankly frustrated, angry and ashamed to be an American because of what we are about to do. As long as other developed countries enjoy adequate and successful health insurance for all of their citizens, we are not the most successful nation on the planet. We are, in reality, guilty of economic racism, and the utter failure of states’ rights when it comes to equality in health care.

Have Cake, Eat It Too 0

Southernbeale dissects the hypocrisy of right-wing Christians. You know them: they are the ones who claim they are oppressed because they are unable to impose their will on others. Here’s a bit (emphasis added):

The idea that Christians have been “targeted, bullied or silenced” is bullshit: have they been denied marriage licenses or the right to adopt? Have their spouses of 40+ years been refused funeral cremation services, as recently happened in Mississippi?

Of course not. But they have been witness to the secularization of American society, something they have been powerless to stop. This is the real “oppression” they decry, and yet there’s a very good reason they can’t stop it: they are part of it. They want the benefits of secularism but not the costs. They want to attend football games on Sunday but don’t want their influence on American society to wane. They want to participate in secular culture while holding themselves above it.

(See the Mississippi story that she refers to. It is vile.)
