Government Is Not a Business 2

Conservatives want to “run the government like a business.”

Their business model of choice invariably seems to be Enron.

Let Wenonah Hauter explain:

But states are not corporations. While conservatives often claim that experience as a corporate executive qualifies them for high office, the analogy fails when put into action. Government works best when decisions are made in the public interest; cutting costs almost always means cutting corners, which is exactly what happened in Flint.

Hey! Rubio! 0

Daniel Ruth points out that consistency is not the hobgobblin of that little mind:

It was only a few months ago that Rubio was dreamily waxing poetic over America’s greatness. But that was before the “We’re all doomed!” wing of the GOP started wailing about how America needs to be taken back, as if the nation had been lost like a set of car keys.

Now Rubio has joined the chorus of hand-wringers, promising that if he is elected president, “We’re going to be America again.” Just what that means isn’t entirely clear, since America always has been America.

None Dare Call It Terrorism 0

Alfred Doblin points out that, in fact, it is.

THE MEN and women seeking the Republican nomination for president should shut up and study history. Governor Christie, speaking before the Republican Jewish Coalition last week, said, “For the first time since 9/11 we’re going to have to confront the loss of American life on American soil to terrorist conduct.”

I guess Adam Lanza, who shot 26 people inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in 2012, was just a man with a weapon. Slaughtering 26 people — 20 were children — was not an act of terrorism because, according to GOP presidential wannabes, a crazed man with a gun killing more than a half-dozen people in a school is not a terrorist. Or James Holmes killing 12 and injuring 70 additional people inside a movie theater in 2012 is not a terrorist.

Pot Criticizes Kettle 0

As a black lady of my acquaintance and I agreed the other night, you don’t have to use the n-word to be a racist. Genteel bigotry is still bigotry, just all dolled up in its Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes.

Plus Ca Change 0

Dick Polman says, “It’s happened before.”

This is Senator Joe McCarthy, the infamous red-baiting demagogue, speaking in 1951: “How can we account for our present situation unless we believe that men high in this government are concerting to deliver us to disaster?”

This is Donald Trump, on TV this morning: “Why do we insist on destroying our country?”

This is McCarthy, in 1951: “This must be the product of a great conspiracy … a conspiracy of infamy.”

This is Trump, talking about President Obama: “There is something going on with him that we don’t know about.”

The ’50s Republican party indulged Joe McCarthy, abetting him with its timorous silence, for four long years before it finally roused itself to take him down. Does the current Republican party have the moral wherewithal to renounce Donald Trump before it’s too late to avert a landslide defeat in 2016?
