Sally Kalson doesn’t think much of the House Republicans’ hearings on the health care exchange website snafu.

Republicans, who have used every trick in their playbook to gum up the works of the Affordable Care Act, are now holding hearings to investigate how the works got so gummed up.

They could save themselves the trouble by looking in the mirror, just as O.J. Simpson could have done to find his wife’s killer. But that would rob them of the chance to grandstand.

John Aravosis:

South Dakota ranchers, who were in favor of the government shutdown, are now bemoaning the fact that the shutdown means no federal assistance following a devastating early blizzard that wiped out much of their livestock.

What’s worse is that the ranchers don’t sound like they’ve changed their minds about the shutdown.

Rather, they think that their welfare checks from the government are the only good the government actually does.

Because they’re special.

But here’s a parting tip for the tea partyers: If you ever hope to extend your appeal beyond your ideological cocoon, if you truly want to convince mainstream Americans that health care reform is horrible, do yourself a solid. Don’t wave the Stars and Bars at the first black president. A tin ear for politics makes you deaf and dumb.

In North Carolina:

The last time Dee Baginski worked was 2-1/2 years ago as a manager for Walmart. Then a car wreck and cancer diagnosis slammed the door on “a whole life in retail management.”

Now, at age 54 and two surgeries later, Baginski finds herself at an Urban Ministries homeless shelter in Durham – uninsured and applying for disability. Her former $28,000-a-year job today seems like an unattainable dream.

While Baginski’s reversal of fortune is beyond anyone’s control, the fate of her health care rests in the hands of North Carolina politicians. She is among a half-million state residents who would have been eligible for Medicaid in January had officials here opted to expand that government program for the poor and disabled.

But North Carolina, like about half the states, rejected Medicaid expansion because Obama.

Don’t do me any favors. Specifically, please stop acting as if allowing the United States of America to meet the debts it has incurred as a result of votes both of us have cast is a concession you are making to me or anybody else. It is simply an act of basic responsibility.

With one exception, raising the debt limit relates only to past spending.

The exception is that if you continue to enable the right wing of your party in its demand that America fail to meet its obligations, the interest we must pay when we borrow will probably go up.

And persons who have been laid off from jobs that pay less than $172,000 a year don’t?

Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) told a local television station that she would not be deferring her pay during the government shutdown, as some other members have done.

“I need my paycheck. That’s the bottom line,” Ellmers told WTVD in Raleigh, N.C.

On the railroad we had a term for persons who wanted to be paid for not doing their jobs.

“Slugs and loads.”

In the Roanoke Times, Andy Schmookler wonders at the Republicans’ magic coat of conservative invisibility. Read it.

But today’s Republican leaders, who claim to be conservatives, trample America’s political traditions while directing their followers’ attention to a few issues of concern that don’t get in the way of their deeper agenda — transferring wealth and power from average Americans to those who already have the most.

John Aravosis had compiled a list of government functions that have been shut down, but haven’t gotten the visibility of the National Parks.

Adults and children receiving treatment for cancer through the National Cancer Institute (NCI) are being sent away.
