The Hollow Men 2
Much fuss attends Senator Rob Portman’s about face on the issue of gay marriage now that it affects someone he personally knows and cares about.
Historiann is not impressed.
Whatever. I’m done with that old Pharisee, Rob Portman, and his “faith tradition” of screwing over every one of his constituents to whom he’s not related.
She has a point.
Safety Net for Me, but Not for Thee (Updated, Kicked to the Top) 0
Gall, unmitigated.
“Peter lost his battle with cancer, and my father found himself with a mountain of medical bills that he could never afford to pay,” Weatherford told lawmakers on the floor of the House of Representatives. “It was the safety net that picked my father up. It was the safety net that picked my family up.”
According to his father, it was Medicaid.
Later in the story, the pol is quoted as saying his father must be mistaken, it couldn’t possibly have been Medicaid. Oh noes.
Addendum:
Surprise, Republicans. It’s not just for “the urban poor” (and we know who you mean when you use that term).
It’s for anyone who needs it.

Cantor’s Cant 0
Paul Krugman dissects Eric Cantor’s recent paean to the stupid. A nugget:
Do actions like this have important effects? Well, consider the agonized discussions of gun policy that followed the Newtown massacre. It would be helpful to these discussions if we had a good grasp of the facts about firearms and violence. But we don’t, because back in the 1990s conservative politicians, acting on behalf of the National Rifle Association, bullied federal agencies into ceasing just about all research into the issue. Willful ignorance matters.

Misdirection Plays, Lift and Separate Dept. 0
Barry Saunders, at the Charlotte Observer, explains (follow the link for the full explanation):
Guns don’t kill people: nipples do.
Say what?
You could easily reach that conclusion after reading Friday’s N&O.
You see, at the same time that state Sen. Stan “Bring ‘em loaded” Bingham was introducing a bill to allow armed volunteers to patrol schools, two other North Carolina legislators were introducing a bill to outlaw exposed female nipples.
I have often asked why Republicans have such a skeevy preoccupation with sex.
There are many reasons, but one is that sex grabs the attention–it makes for great misdirection plays.
