If One Standard Is Good, Two Must Be Better 0

Writing at AL.com, Roy S. Johnson finds (Alabama, since he’s in Alabama) Republicans’ reaction to be ironic, bemusing, and not at all surprising. Here are a couple of snippets from his article (emphasis added):

They were all about justice as long as the criminal justice system primarily impacted other folks—as long as justice was just us.

They were all-in on “rule of law” as long as most rulings tilted in their favor.

Now that one of their own—their big boo-thang—is a felon, justifiably convicted under rule of law by a jury of his peers, Alabama’s top Republicans are wailing louder than the bundled occupants of a neonatal nursery. Call it the big boo-hoo.

(snip)

With the 2024 presidential election looming in November and felon Trump the presumptive Republican nominee, I’m not shocked at the party-line tears shed by the faithful. Even if it exposes their party’s blatant and pitiful hypocrisy about justice and the rule of law.

If One Standard Is Good, Two Must Be Better 0

At the Austin American-Statesman, Brad Pritchett highlights the hypocrisy. Here’s a bit of his article:

The City of Austin recently passed a resolution underscoring its support for transgender residents in their quest to seek healthcare. After a particularly brutal year where the state of Texas continued attacking access to evidence-based, life-saving healthcare with a barrage of legislation that dismisses science, discounts medical experts, and effectively erases the experiences of transgender people, this resolution was a welcome change of pace for LGBTQIA+ Texans.

After the resolution passed, Attorney General Ken Paxton and a cadre of Republican legislators immediately entered chest-pounding mode––a performance typical of firebrand conservatives. Paxton has now threatened to sue the city of Austin. As part of his statement, he insists that, “municipalities do not have the authority to pick and choose which state laws they will or will not abide by.” That’s rich coming from Ken Paxton who, only a week earlier was issuing statements declaring that Texas should defy the updates to Title IX issued by the Federal Department of Education because it includes updated protections for LGBTQIA+ students and faculty.

Chaos Agents, a Notion of Immigrants Dept. 0

At the Arizona Republic, Eddie Jones, an architect who designs border entry facilities and spends much time at around the U.S-Mexican border, argues forcefully that, despite the claims of right-wing politicians, there is no crisis at that border. Here are a couple of snippets from his article; follow the link for evidence and examples.

While the viral film footage out of Texas showing hundreds of men, women, children and the elderly seeking a better life for their families is heartbreakingly real, the obvious fact that this mass of despairing humanity is held at bay in Mexico would certainly suggest that the border is still secure.

(snip)

One thing, however, is for sure: If we continue to make the border a security hot potato, ignoring the humanitarian reality and failing to upgrade our immigration system, we will continue electing people who feign outrage and perpetuate border confusion for their own self-interest.

“Republican Family Values” has always been a con and a scam.

Nothing proves that more than Republicans’ fealty to Donald Trump, who has no family values, nor, for that matter, values of any sort.
