Election Insurrection 0

Farron suggests that election rejection is tantamount to insurrection as he discusses a Pennsylvania Republican who conspired to subvert the 2020 election.

Afterthought:

Methinks that attempting to overturn the results of a legitimate election is about as unAmerican as it gets.

But, apparently, none dare call it treason.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

Field tries to understand Nikki Haley’s attempt white-wash history in ignoring the uncomfortable fact of America’s Original Sin.

Here’s a bit of his article (emphasis in the original); follow the link for the entire post.

Nikki went all pretzel with her attempt to answer the question because she did not want to offend republican voters. Particularly those MAGA loyalist (sic) who she is still trying to court. In the world of half of republican voters, and most MAGA loyalists, the Civil War was more about good Americans just wanting to hold on to their property without the government telling them what to do, than it was about enslaving and cruelly treating fellow human beings. This part of American history has been completely whitewashed by the American right, and Nikki Haley knows this. So rather than show some courage and speak the truth about the real reason for the Civil War (or as they call it in the South: ‘The War of Northern Aggression’) Nikki chose to dodge and obfuscate.

“We renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country,” Donald Trump has said.

Someone should alert him that America is already a hotbed of socialism. But it’s socialism for the rich. Everyone else is treated to harsh capitalism.

Woke to the Misdirection Play 0

LZ Granderson argues forcefully that the “wokeness” at universities is not the issue that some persons are trying to make it out to be. In his article, he calls out the misdirection play (emphasis added):

First, universities have always been political. What do you think segregation was? Why weren’t women allowed? This notion that the congressional hearing exposed some great surprise is political theater at its worst.

The criticism is all part of a larger bid to dismantle the attributes of diversity in general and on campus specifically. That’s why the question of merit arises from affirmative action programs, not from legacy admissions or the power of the donor class.

If Dwight Eisenhower, Ev Dirksen, and Nelson Rockefeller came back from the grave, they would be deeply ashamed of what their Republican Party has become.

Heck, for that matter, even Richard Nixon would likely be less than pleased.

“Vengeance Is Ours,” Saith Republicans 0

At The Colorado Sun, Mike Littwin tries to make sense of the nonsensical. A snippet:

With no smoking gun — with, in fact, no actual evidence whatsoever of high crimes and/or misdemeanors on Biden’s part — House Republicans voted to make the inquiry official anyway because, well, they could. And that’s even though some of the Trump fanboys at Fox News have been forced to admit that, uh, we got nothin’.

So why the official inquiry? Let’s go with the two most obvious reasons. One, because Donald Trump wants it. Two, because Johnson and his team, who can’t seem to do much of anything else, including passing bills to aid an embattled ally fighting off the Russians, felt they had to do something to justify their phoney-baloney jobs.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

The editorial board of the Bangor Daily News points out that supremacist courts are gutting out the Voting Rights Act explains why that is a bad thing. Here’s a bit their editorial (emphasis added):

We’ve noticed an unfortunate notion in conservative politics and jurisprudence basically holding that the VRA did its job and is no longer needed — at least not in the same ways. At best, this is flawed logic, and at worst it’s an excuse for inaction. America’s voting systems and procedures didn’t become less racist because everybody decided one day to be nicer to each other. It happened because the power of the law, this law in particular, made it so. When you allow a key tool of ensuring equality to wither bit by bit, that allows equality to wither with it. This should be unacceptable to everyone, regardless of party affiliation or ideology.
