Precedented, Reprise 0

The editorial board of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch looks at Republicans’ reaction to the indictment of Donald Trump and finds an unprecedented precedent. Here’s a small bit from their piece:

A common theme of the near-universal Republican condemnation of Trump’s indictment is that it’s unprecedented to criminally charge a former president. This is true, but the argument ignores a crucial factor: Trump’s behavior is and always has been unprecedented.

The Rule of Lawless 0

Susan Young, opinion editor of the Bangor Daily News, calls out the vacuous–nay, hypocritical and logic-free–rationale* of those Republicans who refuse to take action against the wave of gun violence. A snippet:

While many Americans, including the Bangor Daily News editorial board, have renewed their calls for tougher restrictions on guns and ammunition, those who oppose such moves are repeating the usual excuses for why such moves aren’t possible or won’t work.

“We’re not going to fix it,” Tennessee Republican U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett, said when asked about the shooting on Monday. “Criminals are going to be criminals.”

By that rationale, we shouldn’t have any laws at all.

Decoding de Code: “Parents’ Rights” 0

Michael in Norfolk clarifies the concept.

What the real goal of the “parents’ rights” groups – many funded by far right dark money – and elected officials pandering to the GOP base is to force the views of a loud (and vicious) minority on all Americans and in the process rewrite history to meet their often white supremacist beliefs and ban books and curriculums that they in their ignorance and prejudice find offensive.

Writing at the Philadelphia Inquirer, Solomon Jones argues that Republicans’ attempts to shield Donald Trump from legitimate legal investigations reveals an ugly truth.

Republican rhetoric has long focused on theirs is a parthy the respects the rule of law. But that principle only seems to appear when the accused is black and poor, not white and rich.

Why am I not surprised?

A Florida textbook publisher removed all references to race from a lesson about Rosa Parks, the Alabama civil rights hero, in an effort to get its books approved by a Florida committee, The New York Times reported Thursday.

. . . which is, natch, exactly what the New Secesh want: to pretend–and to teach the children–that the past never happened.
