In the Brat Cave 0

Title: It's the very normal super-hero duo: MAGA-Man and his youthful sidekick, Fertility Lad (that is, Donald Trump and J. D. Vance); Trump: I love the flag so much I kiss it every chance I get. Vance: I think childless couples are sociopaths. Trump: But we're no weird. Vance: Don't put it in the paper that we're weird. (Pause) It's no use, MAGA-Man. Our villainous adversaries won't stop calling us weird. Trump: Curse those name-calling cucks and pedos. Is it weird to occasionally mention the late, great Hannibal Lecter? Vance: Holy cinematic reference, MAGA-Man. Of course not! Trump: And what's so weird about innocently questioningg Kamala Harris's ethnicity. Say, are you married to someone of Indian heritage? Vance: Obviously she's not white, but I just love Usha (footnote: actual quote.) Is it creepy to want the government to track women's menstrual cycles to make sure they're not sneaking off to get abortions? Trump: Not by any definition of the word that I understand. We're not weird, Fertility Lad. It is the Democrats who are weird. Vance: And we must enlist our very normal allies such as Roger Stone and Laura Loomer to help us amplify this compelling argument. (Newsflash.) Vance: The MAGA-computer says that someone is trapped on a sinking electric boat with sharks nearby. But wait! The boat owner is a childless cat lady. Trump: A perplexing dilemma. Let's sti on the MAGA-couch and consider our options. Vance: Uh, I'll stand.

Tracking the Record 0

Reacting to Donald Trump’s tantrum at the National Association of Black Journalists, the editorial board of the Las Vegas Sun takes a long, detailed look at his track record on race.

No surprises, but, when it’s all collected in one place, it’s–er–rather disquieting.

Patriot Gamers 0

Thom argues nationalism and patriotism are not the same thing and that nationalism is inimical to patriotism. He quotes the French president:

President Macron said that nationalism is a betrayal. “By pursuing our own interests first with no regard to others, we erase the very thing that a nation hold most precious, that which gives it life and what makes it great, its moral values.”

He also points out that America was founded on an idea, however imperfectly that idea may have been implemented, not on white DNA. He argues that today’s Republican Party has forsaken patriotism for (white) nationalism. And, to steal a phrase from Mark Twain that my two or three regular readers know quite well, Thom hears an echo a rhyme from history.

Listen to his reasoning.

Dis Coarse Discourse 0

The editorial board of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch looks at the flood of racist, sexist slurs with which Republicans have responded to the presidential run of Vice President Harris and concludes that, well, they just can’t help themselves. Here’s a tiny bit of their editorial:

Really, what were right-wing politicians and media figures supposed to do when that particular gender and shade of vice president was suddenly elevated to the top of the ticket? Not blow racist, misogynistic dog whistles that sound more like trumpets? Not theatrically smirk at the notion that someone like that could actually have gotten where she is without an affirmative-action boost? Not purposefully mispronounce her first name?

Asking such epic restraint is clearly asking too much.

Michael Hiltzik offers a way out:

Here’s a handy two-step process for taking a thoughtful and judicious approach to the burning social and political issues of our time:

1. Examine closely the position taken by Elon Musk, and;

2. Go the other way.

The Cult of Poisonality 0

Michael in Norfolk has a few questions about the Trump and his cultists.

Likewise, how some Republican “friends” and acquaintances can support the man leaves me dumbfounded. Are they really that racist that they would burn down democracy simple (sic) to maintain perceived privilege and superiority? Are low taxes enough to justify hatred, lies violence and misogyny? Is the desire to inflict archaic, hate driven religious belief reason to destroy the nation as we know it and replace it with a fascist regime?
