War Correspondence 0

In a fascinating read full of history that may surprise you (some of it certainly did surprise me), Charles Ludington reviews the history of Christmas as a celebration, as well as explores its use as a political weapon by the right-wing. A nugget:

. . . the fake “War on Christmas” has been around for a long time, and it serves a particular white Christian nationalist purpose. The “war” was begun in the 1920s by notorious anti-Semite Henry Ford, who reacted angrily when Jewish organizations had the temerity to ask that the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution be enforced, thereby disallowing Bible readings and Christmas pageants in public schools, a common practice at the time. The centripetal forces of the Depression and World War II silenced the conflict for a generation, but the war recommenced in the 1950s when the John Birch Society accused communists (and the United Nations) of conspiring to secularize Christmas for the purpose of socializing America. More recently, in 2004, Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly declared that Christmas was under threat and rallied his troops every Yuletide, right up through President Trump’s December 2016 declaration of victory.

The True Believers 0

At The Roanoke Times, Andy Parker argues–and methinks he has a point–that Trumpism has become a cult. A snippet:

Several years ago, I read with astonishment about the cult mentality permeating Scientology in the book, “Going Clear.” . . . I never thought I’d see that kind of madness catch on in anything other than a fringe in society.

Yet here we are with a cult of millions that make Scientologists look like mainstream Methodists.

Aside:

From what I’ve heard–I’m sure not going to find out for myself–Parler is such a sloppy operation that his account very well could have been impersonated, if not actually hacked.

The Rule of Lawless 0

Trudy Rubin tries to assess the damage done by Donald Trump’s pardoning war criminals for committing war crimes. A nugget:

The president’s pardons dishonor the country and our rule of law system. And they soil America’s reputation around the world.

As Crocker and retired Gen. David Petraeus – who served as commander of US and international forces in Iraq – made clear to me, in a joint statement about the pardons: “American prestige, credibility and security have all been seriously undermined.”

Popularizing Populism 0

“Populism” in American politics has meant many things, from legitimate reform movements intended to improve the economic status of the “populace” to those designed to appeal to its prejudice and bigotry. Lately the latter meaning has been dominant, so much so that in much of what passes for discourse, the former meaning has been forgotten.

In a longish article at Psychology Today Blogs, Eyal Winter considers the latter meaning–the appeal to prejudice and bigotry–and the tactics that its exponents use to attract, keep, and mobilize their followers. Here’s tiny little bit:

And what about the populist leader? In all the countries where he succeeds he always uses the same dual strategy: On one hand convincing his supporters that his opponents are looking down upon them, and on the other hand generate (sic) sufficient anger among his opponents so that their protest can serve him as raw material for his insult industry. Trump has always enjoyed the demonstrations against him. . . . He knew that they increase the support among those who already support him, that it would hence increase their election turnout, and hence his chances to be reelected.

I commend his piece to your attention. It is a timely read in these viral times.

It is both amazing and appalling that this person and those like her are willing to sacrifice America’s democracy on the altar of Donald Trump.

When I first saw headlines about this lawsuit, I had mixed feelings about it.

There are no good guys in this picture, at least not so long as the Trump you-really-can’t-call-it-an Administration keeps lowering the Barr.

A Notion of Immigrants 0

Afterthought:

For a humane take on this “nation of immigrants,” see the marvelous article by the Des Moines Register’s Reka Basu. Here’s a bit:

In this, a nation of immigrants, many are doing hard reckoning. They followed the American dream as the early settlers had done (without visas), expecting the natives to make room for them. They worked to become part of the fabric that binds us, only to now see the rips in it and feel the welcome mat pulled out. Even the ultimate prize of U.S. citizenship is being whittled down by a president who rules by dividing.
