Supply Change, Reprise 0

Clogged up supply chains around the world have garnered much publicity, especially as the time for holiday giving approaches. At the San Francisco Chronicle, Christopher S. Tang takes a look at conflux of factors why we may not be able exactly what we want exactly when we want it oh poor wittle us-ens. A snippet:

The pandemic changed the lifestyle of many Americans, who switched to a hybrid work schedule and started spending more time at home. That fueled surging demand for items like office chairs, printers, gym equipment, and home appliances as consumer demand shifted from service to goods. But just as demand skyrocketed, COVID-19 related safety policies made it harder for suppliers to deliver stuff where it needed to go. Logistics experts have reported that extensive quarantine requirements and partial port closures in China, along with lockdowns at factories in Indonesia and Vietnam, significantly hampered the production of goods for the U.S. market.

Frame One: Man wearing GOP button says,

Republicans no longer have a political party participating in the polity so as to perfect policy. They have become a cult of personality dedicated to disestablishing democracy and effectuating autocracy.

“Come Home” 0

The author of a letter to the editor of The Roanoke Times issues an invitatioh to the Trumpettes. A snippet; the whole thing is worth the minute or two it will take to read.

You have been in an unhealthy and abusive relationship for half a dozen years or so, and it is time for you to cut those ties and return home to your loving family and your democracy.

Please come back to us. You are being led astray by a person who does not care about you. He is using you. He is hateful. He is abusive. He is selfish and self-important. He is not that into you, but he knows you will do anything for him, so he is mad with that power.

A Case of Identity* 0

At the Idaho State-Journal, Leonard Hitchcock considers whether the Republican Party has turned into a cult of Trump. Here’s a bit:

For Republicans who have adopted this cult-follower attitude, an unthinking, intense partisanship has replaced a thoughtful commitment to policies.

It’s worth noting, however, that the Trump “personality” is not without policy implications. In any number of public remarks and actions, Trump has made it clear that he believes that white people are the “real” Americans and that conservative Christianity is the country’s “real” faith. It is this barely concealed racism and overt support for evangelical Christianity that seem to be the Trump traits that have produced a cult following. Admittedly, neither racism nor religious bigotry qualify as policies, in the proper sense of the word, but Trump’s immigration policy obviously flowed from his racism, and his opposition to abortion reflected his commitment to conservative Christian doctrine.

His is a thoughtful and reasoned analysis and well-worth the few minutes it will take to read.

The Motive behind the Madness 0

Mac Stipanovich attempts to understand Florida’s Governor Maskless Marauder Ron DeSantis. A nugget (emphasis added):

When it became apparent that many of Florida’s 67 local school boards intended to require students, teachers and staff to wear masks based on the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics, plus the clear consensus of health care professionals generally, DeSantis did not see a serious public health issue. He saw an irresistible opportunity to pander to the MAGA peanut gallery on a grand scale.

A Notion of Immigrants 0

New Jersey pastors call out the Republican lieutenant-governor candidate for racist, bigoted remarks. Here’s what she said:

“I mean, right now look at all these people with COVID who are coming across the border, and it scares me,” Allen said. “They’re put on buses. I suspect some of them are coming up to New Jersey — not a good idea. (But) the people who are pulled over from the border who are carrying illegal guns or drugs, or whatever. So there’s a lot of things going on that I didn’t want to see go on, and that was the reason that I voted for Trump.”

Here’s part of the pastors’ response; follow the link for the rest.

The trope that migrants carry diseases that threaten national security is among the most pervasive myths touted by anti-immigration hardliners.

Senator Allen is not alone in using this dangerous rhetoric. She joins the ranks of elected officials and cable news pundits who have sought to offload accountability for failed efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 on migrants crossing the southern border.

It should come as no surprise that their claims have been thoroughly debunked.
