Outside agitator frolics.

Matthew Lee Rupert, 28, is in custody in Chicago on charges of civil disorder, possession of unregistered explosives and participating in and organizing riots, making him the first person to face federal prosecution for allegedly taking part in the fires, looting and other violence that engulfed the Twin Cities since the death of George Floyd in police custody. He is scheduled to appear before a federal judge in Chicago later Monday.

Last Thursday night, Rupert posted on his public Facebook page an invitation for “goons” to join him in traveling to Minneapolis, where he said he was renting hotel rooms and planned to wreak havoc and “take hella good videos.”

Susan Estrich argues that Donald Trump has been waiting for the opportunity to play his own Willie Horton card.

I would counter that he has been playing it continually for forever.

A Divider, Not a Uniter 0

SeattlePI columnist John Connelly looks at the recent riots in reaction to the killing of (yet another) black man for being black. He points out that this is but one in a long series eruptions in the history of white American racism and the legacy of America’s original sin.

Here’s a snippet:

Racism is America’s social and political pandemic. The vast civil unrest of this weekend comes on the 99th anniversary of the Tulsa race massacre, in which white vigilantes murdered 300 African Americans and set fire to 35 city blocks.

No antidote for endemic racism has been found, not even the election of a Black president. The man who succeeded him spread to falsehood that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. It “spikes” with periodic killings by police. The news media cover protests and riots, but give far less attention to what makes even nonviolent protesters angry.

We’re badly equipped for this spike. President Donald Trump is a deliberate divider, going so far as to encourage violence. . . .”

Co-opting Covidiocy 0

Snopes has an article exploring why far-right groups, like the Proud Boys, are embracing the “reopen the economy” protests. An excerpt:

For far-right groups, almost any interaction is an opportunity to connect with people with social or economic insecurities or their children. Even if some of the protesters have genuine concerns, they’re in protest lines near people looking to offer them targets to blame for society’s problems.

Once they’re standing side by side at a protest, members of far-right hate groups begin to share their ideas. That lures some people deeper into online groups and forums where they can be radicalized against immigrants, Jews or other stereotypical scapegoats.
