A Notion of Immigrants 0

At AL.com, Daniel Price reminds us that the United States, and before it the colonies, has always welcomed illegal immigrants of questionable provenance. Here’s how he introduces his topic:

I know a guy in Georgia who is descended from six generations of Irish that have all lived on the same piece of land since the early 1800s. The first to arrive in Georgia swam here, not from Ireland directly (although that story would be a perfectly Irish tale) but from the British ship he escaped by diving into the ocean at night when the guards were looking the other way. The lad was serving on a Royal Navy press gang, enlisted by force on the other side of the Atlantic. Three months of salt pork and stormy seas were enough. One Olympic feat later, he was an American.

Borderline Disorder 0

At AL.com, Joyce Vance agrees that there is a crisis at the border. An excerpt:

The reality is that there is a mass crisis on the border. However, it is not caravans of criminals amassing in roving bands to overwhelm the border and harm us. It is this administration’s policy of separating families, closing borders to asylum seekers and refusing to process legitimate asylum requests. Immigration policy has been broken in this country for decades and there is plenty of blame to share. But these policies are new and unique to this administration and it has created a humanitarian crisis. Our government was not prepared to house or care for these people, even as it took them into custody. This administration is making people suffer to advance a political argument.

Concentration Camps for Kiddies 0

At The Sacramento Bee, Gil Duran remembers a holocaust survivor who recently passed away and then turns his attention to Donald Trump’s concentration camps for kiddies. Please do give it a read.

An excerpt:

The question is not what to call the camps. The question is how to respond to this ongoing campaign of racial hatred and dehumanization against Latinos and others. Trump and his enablers constantly force us to confront new horrors designed to terrorize minority groups and divide the country.

“The dangers of fascist politics come from the particular way in which it dehumanizes segments of the population,” writes Yale Professor Jason Stanley in “How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them.” “By excluding these groups, it limits the capacity for empathy among other citizens, leading to the justification of inhumane treatment, from repression of freedom, mass imprisonment, and expulsion to, in extreme cases, mass extermination.”

Immunity Impunity 0

Steven M., considering the threatened militia attacks in Oregon, espies a double-standard. A snippet:

Threats of violence from non-whites are regarded as scary and menacing by the media, liberal or non-liberal. But rural whites are seen as Real Men and Real Americans; when they threaten violence, they’re just getting back to their frontier roots.
