One of the purposes of the social contract is that persons can attend public events without needing armed guards.

Shaun Mullen explains (follow the link for the complete article):

But that should not blind us to the reality that monsters like Bush, Sayoc and Bowers are listening when Trump adroitly brings out the worst in human instincts in advocating violence, playing footsie with neo-Nazis and dog whistling anti-Jewish messages while shamelessly admiring one world leader above all others — the man who after all is responsible for his improbable presidency and the nightmare it has visited on America.

Donald Trump’s One Note Samba 0

Will Bunch tells a tale of Trumpian tactics. A snippet:

To hold his right-wing base together and drive them to the polls, Trump’s weaponry includes such diverse elements as … fear. Actually, that’s pretty much the only element he’s got — fear — and so he is turning up the volume to deafening levels.

“Us” and “Them” 0

Nigel Barber looks at the dynamic of tribalism. Here’s a bit:

Social psychologists have long known that it is very easy to whip up group conflict but trickier to calm it down. Incitement can be as trivial as giving randomly-selected groups a different hat or badge.

Read it. It will help you understand our collective descent into the maelstrom.

Big Bucks in Bigotry 0

In the Des Moines Registry, Todd Blodgett, who used to monitor hate groups for the FBI, explains that not only does hate sell, it pays, and pays big. A snippet:

A full-time hater I monitored, the late Willis Carto, ran a media empire based on anti-Semitism with annual revenues exceeding $10 million during the seven years he and I were professionally associated. It’s NOT only hillbilly bigots or violent, tattooed, racist skinheads who support this putridity. The great-grand niece of inventor Thomas Edison, Jean Farrell, left $17 million to a Carto-controlled entity in the 1990s, to create doubt that the Holocaust never happened. From 1971 until the early 1990s, the former son-in-law of President Franklin Roosevelt, Curtis Dall, headed the Liberty Lobby, an organization that promoted anti-Semitism and white supremacy. Blaming Jews for societal strife has occurred since before William Shakespeare was born in 1564. But it’s now being stepped up, even in Iowa.
