Maskless Marauders, Making Sense of Stupid Dept. 0

Writing at the Idaho State Journal, Mike Murphy offers a theory as to what’s behind the mania of the maskless marauders.

His piece is so well crafted–well, just go read it for yourself.

Vaccine Nation 0

A Florida state senator proclaimed that he wants=ed to “review” vaccine mandates for such illnesses as measles, mumps, and rubella, then, after the public reaction, he denied that he had said what he had said.

The Orlando Sentinel’s Scott Maxwell comments; follow the link to finish the article.

. . . somehow in 2021 we have reached the bizarre place where some people don’t want to listen to medical experts when it comes to medicine.

Clogged pipes? Call a plumber. Stalled car engine? Rely on a mechanic. But when it comes to a deadly virus, some people would rather listen to gasbag politicians or Nicki Minaj’s cousin’s friend.

I’m convinced that if Twitter and Facebook had been around when the polio vaccine was invented, we’d still be dealing with polio.

We are a society of stupid.

Death and Taxes 0

What happens when someone makes a typo that results in the SSA or the IRS deciding that you are dead?

Sally Parsons can tell you. A snippet:

Eight years after federal agencies mistakenly marked her as dead, Sally Parsons is finding herself once again needing to prove that she’s alive.

Her saving grace is a 2013 apology letter from the Social Security Administration, which reads: “Our records incorrectly showed you as deceased. However, we have since found that you are alive.”

In the last year, she tried to refinance her home but underwriters told her she was dead. She can’t get rebates for the solar panels she installed on her house. She didn’t receive any stimulus checks, and she paid her taxes but didn’t receive any tax refund.

The Vaccine Nation Goes to School 0

Writing as a guest columnist at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, University of Georgia professor Peter Lindsay is less than sanguine about the Georgia University Board of Regents policies in these viral times. He points out that, in the name of “freedom,” the Board has acted in questionable ways, eschewing mask mandates and vaccination requirements; indeed, they have prohibited teachers from so much as inquiring about students’ vaccination status.

A snippet; follow the link for the rest:

Yes, (mask and vaccine–ed.) mandates would coerce those refusing to wear masks and get vaccinated. But they do so just as laws prohibiting assault coerce would-be assailants.

Here’s a bit of the artist’s commentary:

The second someone, like the president, states the truth and publicly blames unvaccinated Americans for the predictable rise in infections the civility scolds. I’m looking at you Jake Tapper, spout off about how finger-pointing is unproductive. Nonsense. There is a segment of the population that has been radicalized and no matter what you say or what you do, no matter how many friends and family members they watch slowly suffocate will they ever get the vaccine.

Writing at The Colorado Sun, Mike Littwin argues the anti-vaxs, anti-mask crowd has a strange and dangerous notion of “liberty.” A snippet (emphasis added):

I mean, look at Douglas County, where the commissioners voted unanimously to end their decades-long association with the Tri-County Health Department because the Tri-County board ordered masks for all students and staff in public schools. In Douglas County, it’s all about the liberty — the liberty for parents to choose to put not just their own kids at risk, but also other people’s kids. And everyone’s kids, as we know by now, seem to be far more vulnerable to the delta variant, not to mention teachers and staff.
