The Courage of Their Conniptions 0

January 6 Capitol rioters are deleting their “social” media posts.

And it’s not working. Here’s a bit from the AP report.

Erasing digital content isn’t as easy as deleting content from phones, removing social media posts or shutting down accounts. Investigators have been able to retrieve the digital content by requesting it from social media companies, even after accounts are shut down.

Posts made on Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms are recoverable for a certain period of time, and authorities routinely ask those companies to preserve the records until they get court orders to view the posts, said Adam Scott Wandt, a public policy professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice who trains law enforcement on cyber-based investigations.

Authorities also have other avenues for investigating whether someone has tried to delete evidence.

Afterthought:

Note the use of the phrase, “delete evidence.”

They Must Be High on Something . . . 0

. . . but, whatever it is, it won’t be Coke.

Officials in Surry County, North Carolina, voted to remove Coca-Cola machines from all government facilities in response to the beverage company CEO’s remarks about Georgia’s controversial new voting law.

The ban passed during a Board of Commissioners meeting on May 17 with a 3-2 vote as a direct response to Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey’s comments calling the voting law “unacceptable” and “a step backwards.”

Vaccine Nation 0

At The Sacramento Bee, Catherine Flores-Martin is disturbed at the amount of anti-vaxx hooey being propagated on “social” media. Here’s a snippet; follow the link for the rest.

Coordinated campaigns by the anti-vaccine industry to propagate disinformation are threatening national progress and the health of individuals. Leaders in the anti-vaccine space are exploiting social media platforms and targeting communities who are susceptible to their messaging due to long-held distrust in the government or organized medicine.

These individuals are not credible health experts or medical professionals. In truth, they are irresponsible “influencers” peddling disreputable medical advice that lacks evidence and scientific basis. By spreading disinformation that plays on people’s fears, they’ve created lucrative networks and channels of promotion from which to sell books, solicit donations and generate advertising revenue.

One more time, “social” media isn’t.
