We are a society of stupid, and the stupid, it burns. It burns all of us.

Afterthought:

I was in a shop recently and said to the clerk, after a bit of banter, “I never thought I’d live to see the end of the American dream.”

But I have, and America did it to itself.

I am not sanguine.

Unmasking the Maskless 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Bree McEwan explores why some Americans are so dead (ahem!) set against wearing masks, despite that doing so is easy and painless, in these viral times.

Her article defies excerpt or summary and is worth the four minutes it will take you to read it.

“B-B-But No Other Explanation Makes Sense” 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, David Ludden explores recent research as to the varied reasons why some persons adhere to conspiracy theories that are plainly absurd in the light of pesky things like “facts,” “knowledge,” and “logic.” Here’s one element he cites; follow the link for the full discussion.

For instance, people who believe the Earth is flat or that the government is controlled by lizard people from outer space don’t derive any sort of social identity from their beliefs. Rather, they see themselves as special because they’re privy to knowledge that non-believers don’t have or are unwilling to accept.

Great Moments In Zoom 0

You can’t make this stuff up. (And you wouldn’t want to.)

Full Disclosure:

I’ve attended two Zoom meetings.

Both were private, by invitation only, and neither was Zoombombed. And, I must say, Zoom seemed to work quite nicely on my Android devices.

I think part of the security problems Zoom had was because, four months ago, hardly anyone had heard of Zoom. Then all of a sudden everyone was trying to use it. And, per security maven Bruce Schneier, Zoom is making progress on the security front.

Writing at Psychology Today Blogs, Nathan Heflick discusses the results of a survey that indicates that many persons may be unreasonably optimistic about their ability to escape COVID-19. He finds the implications of their optimism disturbing.

A snippet:

In general, this optimism was related to less hand-washing, less social distancing, and less mask-wearing . . . .

I have to agree with the masked fellow who was ahead of me at the drug store the other day. I overheard him saying to the clerk, “Why do they want to go around infecting people? I just don’t get it.”

On the other hand, I don’t get persons who are driving alone in their cars and wearing masks. I put mine on when I get out of the car to deal with people; the rest of the time, it hangs from my cell phone holder.
