Flying the Fiendlier Skies 0

Robert Reich explores why traveling by airline has become so unpleasant. He lists five reasons; here’s one of them (emphasis in the original):

Number 3: Exploiting Workers

While their jobs have become more difficult, many flight attendants haven’t had a raise in years.

And a lot of their hardest work is totally unpaid, because most flight attendants don’t get paid during the boarding process. They’re off the clock until the plane’s doors close.

And if the flight is delayed, those are often extra hours for no extra money.

Again, this mirrors trends in the overall economy, where too many workers are pushed into unpaid overtime or made to do work or be on call during their off hours.

Twits Own Twitter 0

Legal-oriented subreddit Xes out links to Twitter. Here’s the gist; more at the link.

Elon Musk has decided to reenable accounts suspended for posting CSAM (Child Sex Abuse Material–ed,) while at the same time allowing the most basic of CSAM scanning systems to break. And, that’s not even looking at how most of the team who was in charge of fighting CSAM on the site were either laid off or left.

(snip)

r/law, a popular subreddit about the law announced last week that it was completely banning links to Twitter for this reason.

A reporter for a local television station tells her story of dealing with internet scammers who tried to rent her rental property out from under her (and of some honest people she met along the way).

It’s a fascinating read, and again reminds us that, just because you see it on a computer device screen, it ain’t necessarily so.

Fly the Fiendly Skies 0

On July 3, Flight 3316 left Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas at about 9:20 a.m., according to FlightAware. But the plane landed in Oakland at 12:49 p.m., two and a half hours before it was scheduled to land in Maui. Authorities were notified at about 11:50 a.m. that a flight attendant had received a photo on their cellphone indicating a bomb threat, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told SFGATE. . . .

How did the attendant receive this photo, you might inquire.

Via Apple AirDrop, which means someone on the plane thought this was a good thing to do.

We are a broken society.

Gutting Out the Vote 0

If you’re disabled, Texas Governor Abbot doesn’t want to make it any easier for you to vote.

Gov. Greg Abbott on Saturday vetoed a bipartisan bill that would have expanded vote-by-mail access for people with disabilities — specifically people who are blind or paralyzed and need assistance marking their ballot.

The Bullies’ Pulpit 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Mark Travers discusses a study about why some persons turn into cyberbullies. The findings were not expected. An excerpt:

However, contrary to previous research linking cyberbullying to factors such as low self-esteem, the perceived anonymity of the online world, anger, and a desire for revenge, Soares’s study involving 359 Canadian young adults revealed distinct motivations for cyberbullying — primarily driven by what researchers have termed ‘recreation’ and ‘reward.’

“Recreation pertains to impulsive antisocial acts, whereas reward relates to more calculated and premeditated acts that may evolve over time,” said Soares. “Young individuals who partake in antisocial behavior online may be driven by a desire for excitement and the pursuit of positive emotions or social status among their peers.”
