Involuntary Servitude Meets Voluntary Turpitude 0

Reporter to Trump: How can you force 50,000 federal employees to work without pay. Trump: That's 30,000. They only count as 3/5s of a person. Aside from the cartoonist: He's a strick obstructionist.

Donald Trump’s government shutdown is now taking food out of the mouths of children.

The federal government’s budget stalemate (they misplet “Trumpian temper tantrum–ed.) over border security is causing lunches to shrink at one eastern North Carolina school district.

Vance County Schools officials announced on Facebook late Tuesday that lunch menus “have been revised to a minimum level to conserve food and funding” starting Jan. 21. The county is about 50 miles northeast of Durham, along the Virginia state line.

Hatred in the Workplace: A Cavalcade of Craven 0

Over at Above the Law, Richard B. Cohen corrals a flock of work-place discrimination and harassment cases. It’s worse than I could have imagined.

Here’s a bit; follow the link for the herd.

One Washington State company sued by the EEOC agreed to pay $165,000 to settle a case in which it was alleged that the manager and assistant managers subjected the only black employee to slurs such as “spook,” “boy,” and “King Kong,” and told him that he had the “face of a janitor.”

And there were death threats. Death threats! In the workplace!

An assistant manager allegedly told him, “We will hang you. We will seriously lynch you if you call in again this week.” And another asked him if he was “ready to commit suicide,” and even offered him “assistance” if he wanted to do it.

Yes — he was fired.

I can’t say I’m a Sasha Baron Cohen fan. I may have seen one of his clips back in the Borat days, and I don’t subscribe to any “premium” television channels. Indeed, I think “premium television” is ipso facto an oxymoron.

Nevertheless, I’m somewhat awed by the deep vein of white-wing stupid he has managed to tap into.

All That Was Old Is New Again 0

The Raleigh News and Observer reports that Rufus Edmisten, who served on the staff of the Watergate Committee, hears a familiar ring in contemporary events. A snippet:

The parallels between then and now are striking: a break in at the Democratic National Committee, hush payments, secret tape recordings and an investigating Senate committee led by the senior senator from North Carolina. But Edmisten thinks the investigation into possible collusion with the Russians by the Trump campaign could trump the historic 1970s scandal.

“I think they’re trying to outdo Watergate,” he said of President Trump’s advisers and associates and the president himself. . . .

“If some of the people around Trump would read the Nixon-Watergate playbook, they wouldn’t be doing this foolishness. Instead they are expanding on it,” he said.
