The Coronation 0

House GOP crowning the new Speaker of the House with the hat of the QAnon Shaman.

Dick Polman is less that taken with the Republicans’ choice for Speaker of the House. Here’s a bit of what he has to say:

Just what we need running the House: A evangelical fanatic who touts the blessing of a felonious criminal defendant who yesterday was fined 10 grand for contempt of court. A guy who formerly ranked 213th in House seniority is now second in line to the presidency. Every time we think we’ve hit bottom in this benighted nation, another cellar trap door creaks open.

Charles Kettering:

Why is the human skull as dense as it is? Nowadays we can send a message around the world in one-seventh of a second, but it takes years to drive an idea through a quarter-inch of human skull.

A Tune for the Times 0

Mangy comments at the Youtube page:

Donald Trump was complaining at one of his rallies recently that the TV networks and press never give him credit for being such an outstanding orator. Few Rotary Club secretaries reading the minutes of the past month’s meeting can come close to him in terms of whipping a crowd into a frenzy. Very few PTA treasurers reading their financial report aloud to parents can rival him when it comes to inspiring folks to violence. What more proof does one need? Trump is kind of the Mark Twain, Julius Caesar, Will Rogers, Bernie Madoff, and Adolph Hitler of public speaking, all in one package, equal in size to the lot of them as well.

Mangy Fetlocks has a great reverence for those who can command a crowd by sheer force of will. He’s heard more than his share of braying asses, and Trump is up there with the best of them.

The Law’s Belay 0

At Above the Law, Kathryn Rubino reports.Donald Trump’s legal team tries to go viral, citing fear of COVID.

The judge belayed their scheme:

Judge Arthur Engoron denied the request, wryly noting, “Masks are available. We are going to proceed.”

David Pakman notes the irony.

Sweat Shops 0

In an article at The Roanoke Times, Hayleigh Colombo takes does a deep dive into the supply chain for college-branded apparel. The article contends that colleges and universities who profit from the sales could and should do more to ensure that workers are fairly treated.

It’s not a pretty picture. Here’s a tiny bit:

That means for one $21.99 Notre Dame Fighting Irish T-shirt – made in Nicaragua and currently being sold in the university’s online book store – the workers who produced the garment likely earned no more than the U.S. equivalent of 13 cents, while retail markup and brand profit accounted for more than 70% of the final price. The minimum wage there is less than half of what the Global Living Wage Coalition estimates would be enough to cover their expenses.

To the best of my recollection, Congresspersons take an oath to support the Constitution, not to subvert it.

Republican Thought Police 0

Michael in Norfolk decodes de code:

If one listens to Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and other disingenuous liars on the political right, they claim to be advocates for “parents’ Rights.” Yet when one takes a look at what their agenda really entails, it is really all about suppressing parents rights save for the minority of Christofascists and white supremacist in the GOP base. These people find any book acknowledging the lives and loves of any one non-white or non-heterosexual to be abhorrent.

Insincerely Yours 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Dr. Bruce Y. Lee takes a deep dive into fake apologies. You know the ones; he describes them in his opening:

How many times have you seen politicians, business leaders, or celebrities issue apologies that leave you wondering: “Did that person actually apologize?” Or heard a coworker, friend, or someone else tell you something like, “I’m sorry that you misinterpreted my actions”, “I apologize if I offended you in any way”, or “Fine, I’ll apologize, if you insist,” which is, basically, an apology that doesn’t feel like a real apology?

Well, I regret to inform you that such apologies are not only fake but, unfortunately, very common.

Follow the link for some pointers on how avoid being taken in by them.

Somehow, when things change, it’s easier to just put your head in the sand and leave it there.

Meta: Maintenance 0

I logged into my VPS tonight, as I do several times a week, to do routine maintenance. (Indeed, the last time I had to call my hosting provider’s most excellent tech support, the support tech was mildly surprised to find that my server was quite up-to-date. Having briefly worked in hosting provider tech support, I am not surprised that he was mildly surprised.)

I ran a virus scan (it came up clean as usual), then I ran an software update. The update updated the SQL database engine.

As I commonly do after an update, I went back to the backend of the blog and clicked on a random link as a test and got the dreaded “Error connecting to database” error. But, a moment later, everything was working again. I’m guessing that the database engine update hadn’t quite fully taken effect, but that’s just a guess. Anyway, just for grins and giggles, I restarted the server.

Everything seems to be working okay now.

Aside:

I’ve been using the same hosting provider for over a decade, ever since I stopped self-hosting. I went with it because someone I found trustworthy recommended it. I haven’t looked elsewhere because of the quality of its support techs. Fortunately, I don’t need them often, but they have never let me down.

Its support techs set the example.
