Amusingly, I got attacked on my own page yesterday for making the comment in one of my pieces on global crowd-sourced sweatshopping that there was an immorality to a system that strives to pay people slivers of the minimum wage. My page is public and a bunch of angry white libertarian men in their 50’s showed up to try and ridicule my name. When I blocked them they became infuriated and mailed around the link to ‘friends’ so they could come and join the attempted lynching. It wound up reduced to a few of them writing messages that anyone who wearing a fedora in their profile picture — I have a hat on — is a “douchebag.” It was amusing since they’d all read the linked piece on the blog but declined to comment there because they knew it would be caught for moderation. It takes very little to bring on a rage fit among them, then it escalates and gets out of hand until they tire of being blocked. Anyone who’s witnessed it understands implicitly why the GOP operates the way it does and why the US cannot now be governed. They’re wired so that even the slightest things immediately turn into all out war. And it was all about a single statement of mine that paying people a fraction of the minimum wage was immoral. On my turf.

When you don’t have rationality, hate is a good substitute.

They see life as a zero-sum game.  They don’t get that a rising tide floats all boats; they believe that they must sink all the other boats so they can remain afloat.
