According to Madison County coroner Julie Phillips, the tragedy occurred at approximately 5:35 p.m. The Oglethorpe County High School student had loaded a rifle and handed it to his father, Terry, who put the gun, which had a strap, over his shoulder. As the two attempted to put a boat in the river, the gun discharged and struck the child in the chest. Newsome died at the scene.

According to the story, the father is “distraught.” The coroner is wrong, though; this was not a “tragedy.” This was negligence.

Four Kenosha schools were on temporary lock down for about 30 to 40 minutes after a man shot himself in the leg. Police believe the shooting was accidental, but shut down the schools as a precaution.

San Antonio police say a 6-year-old girl has died in an accidental shooting when she and her 8-year-old sister were together while their mother was elsewhere in the home.

Police said a man accidentally shot himself in the leg while at a Wal-Mart store in Phoenix on Saturday.

Phoenix police spokesman Officer James Holmes said the man had a gun on his hip and it went off.

Another gun that chose to go off on its own. Are we approaching the singularity of stupid shooting?

Merrillville Police Cmdr. Jeff Rice said Irby took a gun from his parents’ bedrooom and went to his room, where the gun discharged.

The child suffered a single gunshot wound to the head, Rice said.

Flores told deputies Duenes followed him and rear-ended his vehicle. Flores said after the collision, Duenes got out of his vehicle and started towards Flores, who was still in his vehicle. Flores told investigators he leaned back and fired a gun towards Duenes and the ground, and then saw Duenes limp back to his vehicle. Flores said after the shooting, he drove home and later got rid of the gun.

Roanoke police have arrested a man after reports of someone firing multiple shots with a high-powered gun from a northwest Roanoke motel roof this evening.

Police spokesman Scott Leamon said the person was taken into custody by heavily armed SWAT officers around 6:30 p.m., more than an hour and a half after someone began firing shots from the roof of the Starlite Motel in the 4400 block of Melrose Avenue Northwest.

A South Carolina woman shot and accidentally killed a friend while testing out his bulletproof vest.

Sheriff’s deputies in Anderson County said the victim, 26-year-old Blake Wardell, had been hanging out in a garage with about eight to 10 friends early Wednesday when they decided to try out the Kevlar vest.

Investigators said 18-year-old Taylor Ann Kelly fired a shot at Wardell’s chest but missed the Kevlar.

Somewhat surprisingly, police found that everyone involved was sober. The results of the IQ tests, though, have not come in.

So there really is a “Starlite Motel.” Who woulda thunk?

Politeness means keeping it clean.

A couple of hours later, the man decided to clean the rifle, police said. He claims he took the magazine out and cleared the gun, but when he sat down, his finger accidentally pulled the trigger and a chambered round discharged, according to Weber County Sheriff’s Sgt. Lane Findlay.

The bullet struck the man’s 49-year-old father, shattering his femur, Findlay said.

Outdoor activities have been suspended at a Clayton County elementary school after a student was shot with a BB gun Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.

Kenneth Ranfos, who has been hunting with his cousin for 40 years, shot him from just 30 yards away with a shotgun. WBZ speculated that Kenneth Ranfos may have mistaken his cousin’s bald head for a turkey when he quickly removed his hat.

A 22-year-old woman is dead after a farmer mistakenly shot her thinking she was a groundhog in tall grass.

Stark County Sheriff George Maier says Natasha Stover was shooting targets Monday with a BB gun when she laid down in the grass. Farmer Ralph Adams Jr., 79, thought she was a groundhog and fired a rifle about 165 feet away, hitting Stover in the head.

When you unload on a friend, be sure to do so politely.

The Chattanooga Police Department reported that it responded to 124 South Moss Ave. today where a woman had been shot accidentally in her foot by a friend trying to unload a handgun.

Play with yourself, politely.

Police say Boyd and his friend, the victim in this case, were walking back from a party on campus when Boyd pulled the gun out and began playing with it.

“At some point around the baseball field, Mr. Boyd produces a firearm and is playing with the slide and the gun accidentally discharges shooting him in the leg,” Capt. Robert Swanigan, of Georgetown Police, tells us.

Boyd is being held in the Scott County Detention Center charged with first degree wanton endangerment.
