Friends should be polite to each other.

An intoxicated minor who was driving with a loaded AR-15 rifle in his lap Saturday evening told police that he carried the assault weapon because he “has seen crazy stuff since moving to Florida” from Alabama, according to arrest affidavits.

Parent politely.

A 9-year-old boy was shot Thursday night in what police described as an accident as a father attempted to clear his handgun of ammunition.

Well, he certainly did clear his armament of ammunition, did he not?

One more time, “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.

Yet another responsible gun owner demonstrates that politeness is a family value.

The sheriff’s office said Andrew Smith, 28, was deer hunting with his father and a group of friends on Dec. 2 just south of the city of Delaware in a wooded area along Pollock Road.

Smith was not wearing any orange hunting gear when his father mistook him for a deer and shot him, according to the sheriff’s office.

Once again, adults ensure that children are exposed to politeness at an early age.

There’s been an outbreak of politeness in Wichita, Kansas:

(Police Chief Gordon–ed.) Ramsay said the first shooting involved someone who shot their significant other in the hand while checking the safety on a gun kept under a pillow in bed. In the second incident, someone accidentally shot themself (sic) in the leg.

A gun under the pillow? Someone’s been watching too many old detective movies.

Guns and stupid, guns and stupid.

The Columbus police department said in a statement: “Upon arrival, officers found 12-year-old Lidia Ghide suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was transported in critical condition to Mount Carmel East Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:27 p.m.

“The investigation revealed that 42-year-old Eric Carpenter was handling a rifle in his apartment when the gun was fired. The shot fired left Carpenter’s apartment and hit and fatally wounded Lidia, who was in an adjacent apartment.

One more time, “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.

. . . police said new information uncovered that the gunfire was the result of a person walking through the store and adjusting his pants when the firearm he had in his waistband went off.

“It appears the shot was accidental and no one was injured by the bullet,” a police spokesperson said.

We are reminded once again that politeness is child’s play.

The NRA will no doubt claim that, had the other child been packing, he could have defend–oh, wait. THey were away on a cruise at the time.

Yet another responsible gun owner discharges his responsibility.

Galford died from a single gunshot wound to the left side of his torso, Scott Schell, Crawford County coroner, told the Tribune Wednesday afternoon.

Galford was wearing a shoulder holster and apparently was holstering the gun when it went off accidentally, striking Galford, Schell said.

Many years ago, when he was working in Vermont, my brother told me that his boss had stopped hunting.

Seems he–the boss–had been relaxing in a bar after a day in the field and overheard two visitors from another state talking about their day stalking deer. One of them said, “I didn’t see a thing all day,” The other replied, “Neither did I, but I got off a couple of sound shots.”

And that’s when boss hung up his gun.

The hunt for politeness continues apace.

Afterthought:

Back when I was a young ‘un growing up on Pine View Farm, my aunt and her children (and later her son-in-law), would join us for Thanksgiving dinner at the farm (Christmas Eve would be celebrated at her house). Her husband (who unfortunately passed away before his time when I was eight), son, and son-in-law were avid hunters and, after Thanksgiving dinner, would go hunting for squirrels or rabbits in the woods, off to the left and out of the picture above (yes, Pine View Farm is a real place).

And they never shot anything other than their quarry, if they shot anything at all. My cousin did not mistake his brother-in-law’s orange vest for a squirrel’s bushy tail or a rabbit’s long ears nor vice versa. And they never shot themselves. And, on those times when I walked with them, they never shot me.

All they shot, if they shot anything, was the occasional squirrel or rabbit.

Because they were indeed members of the seemingly now extinct breed, actual responsible gun owners, not the NRA oxymorons; they knew the danger guns posed and treated their weapons with care and caution, not as macho masculine appendages amplifying their own–oh, never mind.

Expose your offspring to politeness at a young age.

The hunt for politeness continues.

Politeness is a family value.

Yet another responsible gun owner discharged his responsibility, and, this time, the person toward whom he discharged it is seeking redress.

Aside:

This particular responsible gun owner reportedly taught gun safety to high schoolers.

Yet another gun fires itself:

Kathlein Heit, 9-year-old daughter of Capt. and Mrs. George Heit, died on the way to the hospital as a result of a gunshot wound sustained in an unusual way. The girl had been visiting at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Heit of Snake Spring Valley, and was being taken home by her father. A loaded gun in the car exploded and the charge hit the girl about a knee.

Self-politeness is the politest kind.
