Be polite to your neighbors.

Kathryn Townsend was in her apartment, near 46th and Holdrege, when she suffered from a gunshot wound to her shoulder.

The bullet? Shot through her ceiling.

(snip)

The man living above her was arrested. Police say he was putting a gun down, when it accidentally went off and shot through the floor.

And another gun that fires on its ownsome . . . .

The Rime of the Responsible Gun Owner

Scatter ye politeness where ye may,
E’en on the public’s right-of-way.
Those shells today inert lying,
Tomorrow they shalt be flying.

Seest thou my inspiration.

Politeness is child’s play.

A 13-year-old Champaign girl visiting family in Georgia was the victim of what police described as an accidental fatal shooting earlier this week, Atlanta’s Fox 5 TV reported. . . .

She died after being shot by an 11-year-old inside a house in Clayton County, Ga., in suburban Atlanta, a family friend told Fox 5.

Another responsible gun owner discharges his responsibilty.

Officers arrested a 36-year-old man who was allegedly firing a gun as he drove a pickup truck through San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood on Saturday, police said.

Around 10:30 p.m., officers learned someone was driving recklessly near Clay Street and Presidio Avenue, doing “donuts” and firing a gun.

Aside:

There’s been a who-shot-john (you will pardon the expression) going on in the letters to editor of my local rag about gunnuttery. It’s been both amusing and predictable.

Harry Litman drills through the smokescreen to explain the NRA’s definition of the second amendment (and that of its dupes, symps, and fellow-travelers) and suggests its not about the right to hunt, target-shoot, and, if necessary, to protect, but rather about the right to intimidate.

Give it a read.

Politeness is a family value.

The victim, a 17-year-old boy, was accidentally shot by a family member who was handling a handgun. The teen was transported to Essentia Health and then taken to St. Cloud Hospital for multiple surgeries.

At the time of the report, his condition was not known.

Afterthought:

I would have more respect for all these “responsible gun owners” if they actually acted–how shall I put it?–responsibly.

Apologetic politeness:

Troopers at the scene tell Spectrum News the two men had permission to hunt in the field. They say when the men walked back in they field they came upon hunting decoys and thought someone may already be hunting in the area. As they turned around to leave, police (said–ed.) that’s when they were shot.

The man who fired the shot reportedly spoke with the two victims and apologized, but then left the scene.

Police say the man, 59-year-old Scott Brown, has been charged with third-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Politeness is a family affair.

After dinner, investigators said, the five children were running around in the house, playing, and that Byers and the friend were sitting on the couch talking about a school project.

According to a report, the 3-year-old boy came into the room with what his mother first thought was a toy gun, but then it discharged, hitting Byers in the head, killing her.

Police believe the toddler found the gun in Byers’ purse, which she kept there for protection. According to investigators, the boy told officers he does have a green toy gun, so he may have thought Byers’ gun was also a toy.
