Anti-Semitic frolics.

The restaurant that posted this claims it did not realize what this was, which leads one to the question: which is worse, conscious, intentional bigotry or ignorant unthinking bigotry?

Personally, methinks it’s a toss-up.

Establishmentarians 0

This quotation from Barry Goldwater is surfacing a lot these days:

Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them.

The reason is simple. He was right.

“Paranoia Strikes Deep” 0

At the San Francisco Chronicle, Charlie Jane Anders tries to under stand the sudden explosion in fear and paranoia about trans people. (I would argue that it’s because hate always seems to find a ready market, but that’s just me.) Given the waves of hate crashing into our eardrums every day, I recommend it as a worthwhile read. Here’s bit:

I’ve faced anti-trans stigma for years. Back in 2007, I interviewed for two different jobs over the phone and Skype, and was told the job was mine — until I met the employers in person — and they suddenly needed to look elsewhere. I’ve also been harassed, stalked and threatened.

But the past few years have felt different.

The drumbeat of anti-trans articles and rhetoric seems organized, coordinated. And I’ve seen the effects in my own world. A couple of years ago, a liberal cis woman who used to go out for drinks every week with a group of trans women, including myself, suddenly “came out” as a transphobe and started spouting views that wouldn’t have felt out of place in right-wing media. I couldn’t recognize my friend anymore, and I still don’t understand.

It Can’t Happen Here? 0

University of Arizona professor Stuart Brody recently visited Auschwitz and his experience left him with a wonder:

Could a holocaust happen in America? I have no answer, only a question: What in world history, and recent American experience, provides the confidence that it couldn’t?

“Pay No Attention to the Man behind the Curtain” 0

A group of super heroes, including Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, etc. confront Donald Trump and his acolytes, such as Mike Lindell, Steve Bannon, Sidney Powell, and so on. Captain America says,

In this particular case, it’s the men and women behind the curtain you have to worry about (as Sam and his crew noted in the previous post).

Misdirection Play, “It’s Just Politics” Dept. 0

At AL.com, Frances Coleman urges persons to reject the notion that holding seditionists accountable is somehow “just politics.” Here’s a bit; follow the link for the rest.

You might believe that this former president was so enraptured in his own ego that he saw this as just another reality television program. Maybe he believed that this was as fake as his fortune, business acumen and leadership.

It wasn’t fake. People were killed. And the rioters who stormed the Capitol were intent on killing leaders of the opposing party as well as the vice president.

It’s terrifying.

An acquaintance of mine, a really charming and smart fellow, suggests that “the other side” riots, too. The mayhem they create is condoned by media outlets like CNN and MSNBC, he adds.

But if any other group attempted to storm the U.S. Capitol, I somehow missed it.
