The most striking elements of so-called health care in America these days is how cruel and unjust it is, and in taking a stand against reforming it the Republican party appeared to be firmly in support of cruelty and injustice. This would be well within the historical tradition of other religious crusades which turned political — such as the Spanish Inquisition and the seventeenth century war against witchcraft.

So there is little that is surprising about the Republican National Committee fundraising document recently reported by Politico, the one that offers strategies to get donors to part with their money. Donors can, it says, be persuaded to give by appealing to their egos, by offering them tchotchkes or by promising them access. And some, the small donors, the $5- and $10-Janes and Joes, can be persuaded if you play to their fears.

The sole surprise is that someone actually wrote it down as a PowerPoint presentation and was absent-minded enough to leave a hard copy in a hotel.

Here, then, is the smoking gun, concrete validation for those of us who contend that since Sept. 11, 2001, fear has been the GOP’s leading export, that under the aegis of George W. Bush’s political guru Karl Rove, the party’s message boiled down to a single command: Be very afraid.

And some of us have eagerly complied, fearing Muslim terrorists, Muslim Americans, Latino immigrants, gay people, black people, even salespeople if they say “Happy holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.” Some of us see socialists around every street corner.

“Already there are signs of … violence emanating from the radical right. Since the installation of Barack Obama, rightwing extremists have murdered six law enforcement officers. Racist skinheads and others have been arrested in alleged plots to assassinate the nation’s first black president. One man from Brockton, Massachusetts – who told police he had learned on white supremacist websites that a genocide was under way against whites – is charged with murdering two black people and planning to kill as many Jews as possible on the day after Obama’s inauguration. Most recently, a rash of individuals with anti-government, survivalist or racist views have been arrested in a series of bomb cases.”

And the Republican Party is quietly encouraging this stuff while acting all proper in public with it’s “socialism” rhetoric.

After a while, the hypocrisy no longer surpises one.

Hypocrisy seems to be a fundamental Republican family value.

Then, again, it wouldn’t be news but for the hypocrisy.

That’s just something Republicans say they are going to do when they are out of power. When you call names for two years, don’t be surprised when someone else calls you out.

As sometimes happens, he is a little unrestrained in his expression, but, none the less, what Brendan said.

Thanks to Delaware Liberal for catching this. Having grown up under Jim Crow and having studied U. S. Southern History as my discipline, I can call it for what it is:

And what gets me is the way that folks like Mr. K. seem to think two things:

Second, that whatever we pay our civil servants is always too much, and hence ill-gotten, which is why it is OK not (sic–I think he meant “to”–ed.) cut people’s pay while expecting them to provide the same labor.

Every once in a while, one of these bozos slips up and reveals how he really feels.

I remember hearing Joe McCarthy’s rants on Marconi’s Magic Box when I was a young ‘un.

He lied. He was a liar through and through, who would say anything to scare the public and get votes.

He is the spiritual godfather of the modern Republican Party, which will say anything to scare the public and get votes.

And in Texas, some folks want his lies to live again.

When we last checked in on the U.S. history textbooks standards setting process down in Texas, the conservative-dominated State Board of Education was mulling one-sided requirements to teach high school students about Newt Gingrich, Phyllis Schlafly, and the Moral Majority.

Now, in the home stretch of a process that will set the state’s nationally influential standards, a liberal watchdog group is worried that the State Board of Education will try to push through changes to claim that communist-hunting Sen. Joseph McCarthy has been vindicated by history, among other right-wing pet issues.

Afterthought:

In the Depression, there was a wisecrack (which I have mentioned before) that the Party that freed the slaves had become the party that frayed the sleeves.

In its most recent incarnation, the Republican Party has become not only the party that frays the sleeves, but also the party that flays the (alleged–proof is not required in their world) knaves.

Torture is a war crime because civilized persons decided that some things are just wrong. Period. Civilized persons don’t do them. And torture is one of them.

It is distressing that, 60 years after the Nuremberg trials and three centuries after the Inquisition and the witch trials, an American political party has demarcated espousing uncivilized behavior as a test of party loyalty.

For at least some Republicans, ethics are apparently no more.

Andrew Sullivan has several long posts cataloging how supporting war crimes has become Republican orthodoxy. Here is the first one, which is probably also the best.
