Bruce Lowry has seen it before:
Then go back and look at the expressions on some of the faces — almost all of them white — at a Donald Trump rally today.
You don’t need me to point out the eerie similarities, and, God help us, they are all too real.
He’s quite correct, you know.

Michael Herriot submits The Caucasian’s Guide to Living under a Terrorist Threat. Here’s one of his hints:
“The Lost Cause” 0
Buried deep in a story about another subject in my local rag–almost an aside–are two sentences that in their off-handed casualness highlight just exactly what cause was lost.
Owners treated the workers* better after an 1808 law prohibiting new slave importation, McGill said.
“You wanted to get the longest service you could out of the ones you owned,” he said.

The Chicago Riots 0
Chauncey Devega was at the Chicago rally for Donald Trump, the one that was purportedly canceled for “security concerns.” He says it has been grievously misrepresented. An excerpt:
(snip)
At Friday’s rally in Chicago, the members of the “silent majority” that Trump speaks for were made, at least for a few hours, to realize that other Americans actually have a voice too. Of course, this moment will only encourage their right-wing politics of racial resentment, hatred, nativism and revanchism. The Trumpeteers now have a story to tell of black and brown savagery in the evil “Democratically controlled” Chicago. This distorted version of events will resonate throughout the Fox News right-wing disinformation machine. Those Trumpeteers at his planned Chicago rally will spin tales of being imperiled by “Mau Maus” and “Commies.” In reality, they were never in any real danger. And like Trump’s other events, the fights and scuffles that did take place were mostly instigated by his supporters.

No End in Cite 0
At Above the Law, Elie Mystal mulls over whether Donald Trump can be charged with “incitement to violence” in connection with one of his supporter’s “sucker punching” a protester and concludes “no.” Mystal applies the Hollywood super villain standard to illustrate the reasoning:
He’s not throwing cash in the streets and watching people fight over it, like Jack Nicholson’s Joker. He’s giving middle class people the moral authority to blow up some undesirables, like Heath Ledger’s Joker.

Unintended Consequences 0
Jamelle Bouie, writing at the Boston Review, finds something positive in Donald Trump’s race to the bottom for the Republican presidential nomination. A nugget:

Playing Trump 0
Tony Norman considers Donald Trump and his no-longer-silent racist dog whistles.
It’s worth a look.
Hint: He’s more optimistic than I.

“He Don’t Know His Place” 0
As regards the Supreme Court vacancy, any Southern boy can tell you what’s going on.
Republicans are punishing President Obama for being uppity.
The Party of Nixon 0
At The Nation, Gary Younge points out that Donald Trump, despite the protestations or the Republican “establishment” (whatever that is) is the heir to half a century of racist Republican tactics since Richard Nixon started the “Southern strategy.” A snippet:
Trump’s rallies are also unburdened by either actual policies or tangible facts. He just says stuff—whatever comes into his head, it seems—and people cheer or laugh, but rarely call him on it. Whether it’s true or consistent really doesn’t matter.

Don’t Overlook the Obvious 2
Leonard Pitts, Jr., tells of a conversation that took place just a little while ago. Here’s a bit from his article:
“Maybe I could have done that a little better,” he said.
One of his friends wasn’t having it. “They were afraid of you for a couple of reasons,” said Denny Jacobs. “Number one, you were black.”
Obama parried the suggestion, saying what he always says when asked about race and his presidency. “I have no doubt there are people who voted against me because of race . . . or didn’t approve of my agenda because of race. I also suspect there are a bunch of people who are excited or voted for me because of the notion of the first African-American president. . . . Those things cut both ways,” he said.
Jacobs, who is white, was unpersuaded. “That’s what they were afraid of, Mr. President,” he insisted.
Dan Simpson also has something to see on this matter. A nugget:

Comment Rescue, Original Intent Dept. 0
Gerald commented on my Original Intent post earlier today and sums up the last seven years:
(Republians) are attempting to treat POTUS Obama’s presidency as 3/5’s (of a presidency).
“Original Intent” 3
“Original intent” is neither a legitimate interpretation of history nor a coherent legal theory. It is a racist primal scream.

Beyonce the Fringe 0
Protests against Beyonce are planned at NFL HQ. Apparently, alluding even tangentially to the realities of being black in America is somehow “hate speech.”
A snippet; much more at the link.
That last group will be meeting outside the NFL’s New York headquarters Tuesday to protest.
“Join us as we demonstrate on the block of the NFL Headquarters building,” the unnamed organizer wrote on Eventbrite. “Are you offended as an American that Beyoncé pulled her race-baiting stunt at the Superbowl? Do you agree that it was a slap in the face to law enforcement? Do you agree that the Black Panthers was/is a hate group which should not be glorified? Come and let’s stand together. Let’s tell the NFL we don’t want hate speech & racism at the Superbowl ever again!”
If the first rule of Fight Club is not to talk about Fight club, it’s safe to say that the first rule of White Club is not to talk about White Club, at least insofar as the Genteel Chapter* thereof is concerned. Heaven forbid that the reality of their white privilege be recognized in word; recognizing it in deed suffices adequately, thank you. Words would only spoil the fun.
Oh Lord, givest thou me a break.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0
This seems to have Wingnut World and the New Secesh in the uproar of the day.
After all, it’s not as if white folks have anything to feel guilty about . . . .
