Why Love a Parade 0

Alfred Doblin discusses Donald Trump’s desire to play with his soldiers. A snippet:

Trump wants a grand military parade because he saw one in France with French President Emmanuel Macron last July on Bastille Day. How ironic that the “America First” president who wants to restrict imports, export immigrants and build a wall on the nation’s southern border to keep out Mexicans, wants a French parade.

Captions Outrageous 2

Last night, we watched an old episode of Perry Mason. (I guess all Perry Mason episodes are old at this point. At least there are no SWAT teams running around like Star Wars storm troopers . . . .)

In one bit of dialog, the word “tycoon’s” appeared.

The closed captions displayed it as “TYXXXX’S.”

Aside:

One of the characters was named “Eula.” Why a character would be named “End User License Agreement” is beyond me.

Twits on Twitter, Reprise 0

Rat: To improve the veracity of social media postings, I'm establishing firm journalist standards for all of my future tweets. Goat: Great idea. What are the new rules? Rat: If it feels true, tweet is. Goat: Oh. Good. Rat: And even if it doesn't feel true, tweet it anyways.

Droning On 0

Boys and their toys:

The man, who was not immediately identified, sent his drone soaring over Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara during the second quarter of the game between the 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks, police said. Later he hightailed it to Oakland, where he deployed the drone over the Raiders game against the Denver Broncos, according to police.

“It was something about free speech and his belief that television stations are corrupt,” said Santa Clara Police Lt. Dan Moreno.

I think he’s missing the boat on television stations. Incompetence and shallowness do not necessarily stem from corruption. They can exist very nicely on their own.

How Stuff Works, TV Weather Dept. 0

Perfessor: It's funny how those TV meteorologist love to report from the middle of a hurricane, but never from the middle of a forest fire. Voice from television: We're going live to Jim . . . You there, Jim? How strong are the winds? Jim: Yeah, Dr. Gregg. This hurricane is a big one. The intensity is getting stronger by the minute, and we're really close to the eyewall. On the Saffir-Simpson scale, it's a cat one, though it's starting to feel like a cat two to me . . . . Larry, our camera guy, had to lash himself to a concrete pylon. Waitress, looking at television: For Pete's sake, this isn't informative weather coverage. It's weather porn.
