Reg Henry Reads His Mail 4

And he wonders about the writers:

But by what hands? Old and bitter hands, I am guessing. Call it the Revenge of the Conservative Codgers. Not that they are all that old. The rot appears to set in at about age 50. GOP? As an elderly but perceptive reader suggested to me, it might stand for Grumpy Old Party.

Judging by my correspondence, I conclude that the worst of the email swappers resent that life as they knew it has changed — a president born in Kenya, can you imagine? Why, yes, these folks can imagine. They are susceptible to any implausible suggestion that lobs into their inbox.

They are prepared to swallow anything that echoes their prejudices, no matter how foolish. They are a Fifth Column sending the equivalent of political pornography to each other.

Vote Obama — He’s lame but the other guy’s a reptile. There’s a slogan. Obama/Biden — They won’t tax you now that you’re unemployed. Obama for President — He drives old white bigots nuts.  Obama 2012 — He probably won’t start a new war.

    Oh, my, yes.

I don’t think Obama is the greatest thing since sliced bread.  For that matter, I don’t think sliced bread is all that great.

But I do think that Obama is a good and decent man trying to do the best he can in a crazy world.

And I realized long ago that every Democrat is better than any Republican.  The discussion can then proceed from that premise.

Regarding the bigots comment, oh yeah, for sure.  Forget the post-racial bullshit.  His presence is driving the racists nuts.  They are coming out of their closets in full battle dress.

I think he’s a decent man, too. He just didn’t quite get the way the party of extremists would really confront him from the very start. He’ll embarrass the fake person called Mitt Romney in the debates and the only reason this election might still be a toss up is because the Democrats so badly underestimated conditions and four years of straight merciless GOP sabotage, He essentially have the economy the Republicans wanted. Completely dead in the water with an occasional slight wind coming along to move it forward a few meters, then back..

He made the error a lot of Democrats do:  expecting Republicans to deal in good faith.

At one time they did, but not any more.
