American Taliban, Making America a Pariah One State at a Time 3

The government of the United Kingdom warns LGBT persons to take care when visiting the United States. Here’s the story from The Independent:

The new Foreign Office advice states: “The US is an extremely diverse society and attitudes towards LGBT people differ hugely across the country. Laws vary from state to state. When you are physically present in a state, even temporarily, you are subject to that state’s laws. You must carry a passport showing that you have leave to enter or remain with you at all times.

“LGBT travellers may be affected by legislations passed recently in the states of North Carolina and Mississippi.”

“Before travelling please read our general travel advice for the LGBT community.

You can read the full warning at the UK government website.

This is the sort of stuff that, when I was a young ‘un back in the olden days, the United States Department of State would say about visiting, say, eastern Europe or Rhodesia.

Jesus.

Um, South Africa. You’ll recall classic rock n rollers making a big deal out of not playing Sun City.

On Facebook I recommended serious economic punishment for Mississippi. Since Mississippi is already a poor state, I suggested the President, as commander-in-chief, instruct all members of the US Navy and Coast Guard to cease ship call, replenishment and repairs in Pascagoula, which is part of the US Navy’s Support Command, shifting their resources elsewhere. It would be a big symbolic blow and a crippling one, business wise, for the state’s Gulf Coast region. It won’t happen but there are things that CAN be done if the will is there.

It would, in fact, be a grazing retaliatory shot at the red state civil war.

The mayor of Portland did something minor in a similar vein. Pascagoula built a new Navy ship called the Portland. The mayor was to go to Pascagoula for its christening. He declined.

Now the commander-in-chief could step in at this point and order the ship elsewhere. As we know, though, a non-starter.

I suspect that it is best all around for the Commander-in-Chief to remain aloof and allow the American Taliban to stew in their own juices.

What was that cartoon I saw and chose not to publish? Oh, yeah, an immensely obese lady pictured from an unflattering angle labeled, “Mississippi, where obesity is genetic and sexuality is a choice.”

Pariah states get isolation. Internationally, that’s the history. Criticism by outsiders, however, is affirming. State government that live in a fantasy world cannot be reasoned with. Economic pain is pain they would feel, though. Ingalls, the private sector business that does all the work in Pascagoula, would be at the governor’s office and in the state courthouse threatening people behind closed doors in less than 24 hours.
