Police said Khaled Elmorsy was cleaning his gun Sunday night when the weapon went off at his condo on North Colony Road.

Elmorsy’s downstairs neighbor, Tom Hollowell, said his 2-and-a-half-year-old daughter was sleeping in her room when the bullet flew by her bed and lodged itself in a closet door about three feet away.

Hollowell and his girlfriend noticed the bullet hole the next day and called police in a panic.

The 31-year-old man killed himself after firing a gun he said was empty, according to reports.

The man was in his apartment in south Evanston with three friends when he retrieved a shotgun, police said. The man proceeded to show off the gun, alarming his friends, who told him to put the shotgun away. The resident ejected two to three rounds from the shotgun and told his friends it was empty. He then held the shotgun to his face and pulled the trigger.

A stay-at-home mother who had recently moved from New Port Richey to Inverness, Katherine Hoover died in a hospital emergency room early Sunday.

She was shot in the head Saturday evening while being shown a gun at a friend’s house in Brooksville, authorities said.

She and her husband, Carson Hoover, had gone to visit friends at 20079 Suncrest Drive in northwest Brooksville, just outside the city limits.

Sometime around 6:45 p.m. inside the house, William DeHayes was showing the Hoovers some of his guns, including a .22-caliber revolver. The gun accidentally fired and shot Katherine Hoover in the head, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

Plotts, who shot and killed his caseworker and shot his doctor at a Delaware County hospital campus Thursday, may have done so because he was offended by the hospital’s policy against guns, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan said.

Just after 4 p.m. Wednesday, witnesses reported hearing a whizzing sound before noticing bullet holes in two windows of a parked mini van.

“The reality is that the trajectory of that bullet, we can show, came from quite a distance away because one shot was in a higher portion of the window, when it exited, it came at a lower portion of the window,” said Sgt. Jeff Edwards.

Edwards said the bullet could have been fired from as far as two miles away – likely from a rifle.

According to officers at the scene in the 800 block of Nevada Street, the boys told them they were walking down the street around 1 a.m. Wednesday awhen they found the handgun.

They told officers they believed the gun was unloaded, and that it was fired accidentally.

One boy was hit in the right ankle. He was taken to University Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening wound, police said.

“It was fired . . . .” I love the passive voice; clearly the gun is the victim here.

Sheriff Doug Cox says that deputies were called to a home in Greenwood just before 3 p.m. on Saturday. When they arrived, deputies found a 47-year-old woman being treated by medics.

The investigation revealed that the woman and her 23-year-old son were going through her recently deceased husband’s gun collection. At some point, the son picked up a 9mm handgun, which then fired, striking his mother in the leg.

“. . . which then fired.” Divine intervention, no doubt.

Police said Jason Bryant, who held a concealed carry permit, went into the store in Orange, where the gun discharged as he pulled up his shorts, reported the Longview News-Journal.

“He walked maybe six feet in the door when he pulled his shorts up, something caught the trigger and the gun discharged into his leg,” said Chief Jim Vanover, of Orange police. “People immediately rushed over to help.”

Police were called to McDonald’s at 13516 U.S. Highway 43 North at 10 p.m. The victim was driving his father’s truck and decided to show his friends his father’s handgun, said Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit commander Sgt. Dale Phillips.

The gun accidentally discharged, Phillips said, striking the man in the right leg.
