Police said the incident unfolded about 4 p.m. inside the Little Caesars, 3463 Fourth St. N, after Randall White, 49, got mad about his service.

Another man in line, Michael Jock, 52, of St. Petersburg admonished White.

That “prompted them to exchange words and it became a shoving match,” said police spokesman Mike Puetz.

White raised a fist. Jock, a concealed-weapons permit holder, pulled out a .38 Taurus Ultralight Special Revolver.

He fired one round, hitting White in the lower torso. The men grappled and the gun fired again, hitting White in roughly the same spot, police said.

The sociopath’s dream: Every city, Dodge City; every hill, Boot Hill.

Sheriff’s officials say a man opened fire in a San Antonio movie theater parking lot, wounding one person before an officer shot him inside the theater.

Bexar (bayr) County sheriff’s spokesman Louis Antu says the incident started about 9:30 p.m. Sunday when the man fired shots inside a nearby restaurant. It’s not clear what led to the shooting.

It’s not going to end, is it?

And while we’re at it, let’s try this on for size: Those who demand unlimited access to weapons – and bark at anyone suggesting restrictions on the number of guns they can buy – are not defending the Constitution, or freedom or integrity. Mass shootings seem to be a peculiarly American phenomenon.

Ezra Klein rounds up some statistics. Here’s a few (emphasis in the original):

2. Eleven of the 20 worst mass shootings in the last 50 years took place in the United States. In second place is Finland, with two.

4. Of the 12 deadliest shootings in the United States, six have happened from 2007 onward.

5. America is an unusually violent country, but not as much as it used to be.

Kieran Healy, a sociologist at Duke University, in July made a graph of “deaths due to assault” in the United States and other developed countries. The United States is a clear outlier, with rates well above other countries.

A gunman opened fire on a police officer and two hospital employees at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama early Saturday morning. According to WAFF, News 48, the incident took place at about 4:00 a.m. on the hospital’s fifth floor.

Birmingham Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Johnny Williams told WAFF that the gunman positioned himself in a hallway and shot at the officer and the hospital staff members as they stepped out of an elevator. Another police officer reportedly came around the corner, alerted by the noise, and fatally shot the gunman.

According to the story, the police say it was an isolated incident.

The police did not mention all the other isolated incidents that happened not to be in Birmingham.

Ask the NRA.

They will tell you that underendowed have a Second Amendment right to singe the blues.

Officials of a northeast Kansas school district say a young pupil who brought unfired .22-caliber bullets to school meant no harm.

Fabiola Santiago writes in the Miami Herald:

“I was just talking about Dev going into kindergarten — and now I’m scared, really scared, Mom,” one of my daughters tells me when I call her after hearing the news.

She and her husband recently moved to Connecticut.

I witnessed their meticulous search for “a safe place” to live and approved of their choice of a charming town strikingly similar to Newtown. On Friday, my 4-year-old grandson was at his school — also carefully chosen, as if enough thought, comparisons, and money could keep him from harm, but too close to the tragedy on this day for comfort.

“I just want to keep him home,” my daughter kept saying. “I don’t trust anybody.”

Chauncey Devega predicts the future most accurately. A nugget:

The NRA and their clan will retreat back to a default position and rhetorical redoubt where “guns don’t kill people, only people do.”

These same ideologues, who in the 21st century remain some type of throwback premodern tribesman at the early dawn of human history, are utterly devoted to a fetish object of metal and plastic which they worship as a god. For them, the mass shooting of children in Newton, Connecticut will be a funeral pyre whose light they will read as spirits dancing in the shadows, beckoning to them that more guns equals less crime, and that school teachers–and perhaps even children–should be allowed to carry firearms in school. Magical thinking brings public policy solutions that are not grounded in common sense or empirical reality.

In a way, the NRA is quite correct.

An official with knowledge of Connecticut school shooting tells the Associated Press that 27 people are dead, including 18 children. Many of the shootings took place in a kindergarten classroom, sources told the Hartford Courant. The gunman is reported dead.

No doubt the NRA will shortly produce a press release informing us that, had the kindergarteners been armed, they would have taken out the shooter.

Frozen heat:

New Mexico authorities say they’re puzzled by what turned up in a package of meat at a Roswell grocery store.

A worker at Albertsons opened a case of frozen ribs Wednesday and found a handgun and ammunition packed with the meat.

State police say Mr. Loughrey, 44, of Sharpsville was getting back inside his pickup truck when the 9 mm handgun went off, the bullet flying through Craig’s chest as he sat in a booster seat on the passenger side. He died instantly.

No charges were filed against Mr. Loughrey, and Cpl. Douglas Maxwell said he doesn’t anticipate doing so.

Mr. Loughrey didn’t know there was a bullet in the handgun chamber.

There really is no excuse for a gun nut’s not knowing his own heat what he is packing is loaded.

Guns don’t kill but gun owners do. Gun ownership in the U.S. – 200 million firearms — is insanely out of whack compared to other nations. An elementary school music teacher walked into a church in the middle of Sunday services and shot and killed his ex-wife as she sat in a pew, police said.

Accidental courtesy.

A woman was shot twice in the back while seated in a vehicle in the desert in Goodyear (Arizona–ed.) Saturday night and police believe she was the victim of an accidental shooting.

Leonard Pitts, Jr., defines “black blindness” as the ability to look at a black person, especially a young male black person, and see something that isn’t there, such as a gun in place of a wallet or a cell phone, or even a gun even in place of nothing whatsoever.

Pitts writes of Jordan Davis, yet another black teenager killed by a white man who intends to claim in his defense that he was just standin’ his ole ground not doin’ nothin’ when he gots afeared for his life (though no evidence of a threat or threatening behavior has been adduced).

A nugget:

The frightening thing, if you are a young African-American man, is that you know nothing makes some folks feel more “threatened” than you. Nor do you threaten by doing. You threaten by being. You threaten by existing. Such is the invidious result of four centuries of propaganda in which every form of malfeasance, bestiality and criminality is blamed on you.

After you read the whole thing, you might share my fear that some of these folks who insist on packing heat do so hoping for an excuse to shoot someone, because they think slinging guns is the cat’s meow and the bee’s knees and they want to be part of cool crowd.

Criticize music, politely.

A man is facing murder and attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting a 17-year-old student at a Jacksonville gas station because the teen’s music was too loud.

The critic says he was only standing his ground.

The store had opened its doors to Black Friday shoppers about an hour before the incident, which occurred as crowds packed into the store.

Witnesses reportedly told police that Salme had behaved rudely that morning and had provoked the situation before pulling the handgun and pointing it at Alex, though San Antonio Police Sgt. Rob Carey said at the scene of the incident that he had actually pointed it at the ground.

Roger Rivera, who was shopping in the Sears, said Salame was punched then pulled a gun. Everyone scattered, “tumbling over things, dropping boxes,” Rivera said. The man who was trying to cut in line ran and hid behind a refrigerator before he fled the store.

Police concluded that the shopper’s action was justifiably courteous.

Miami-Dade police late Tuesday charged 15-year-old Jordyn Alexander Howe with manslaughter and carrying a concealed firearm.

On the way to school Tuesday, Jordyn pulled the gun out of his backpack and displayed it, according to an arrest affidavit. The gun went off once, striking Lourdes in the neck.

Politely discourage strangers from spotting deer.

Police have charged a man with aggravated assault for allegedly shooting a teenage girl who was using a spotlight to look for deer near his southwestern Pennsylvania home.

State police say Jeremy James Pritts shot a 17-year-old girl Sunday night after she used a spotlight from the back of a pickup on an outing with her parents.

Police say Pritts admitted firing at the light, saying he was frustrated with spotters and poachers in the area.
