Melville Davisson Post:

A fairy story is a nice, comfortable human affair. It is about a hero, and a thing no man can do, and a princess and a dragon.

In a Spirit of Balance . . . 0

. . . there seems to be a war on Hanukkah decorations.

The theft of a 9-foot menorah that lit up Lynn University’s campus has its owner vowing to bring the light back.

What troubles me about this sort of stuff is the aimless malicious pettiness of it all.

But, again, mankind is an aimless malicious petty species.

War on Christmas Decorations 0

Tampa’s John Romano suffers a Christmas loss:

He lived for this season. In may ways, it was his time to shine.

He would stand out in the yard with head held high, as if all those wreaths and lights were there simply to draw attention to him.

And then one night, without warning or mercy, he was gone.

Someone stole my %&#!@$ Rudolph.

Gunning for Trouble 0

A man who reportedly walked into a Safeway carrying a rifle Wednesday afternoon was safely disarmed and cited for carrying the exposed firearm in public, police said.

(snip)

The man, who has not been identified, told officers “he was unaware of the law.”

Under state law, it’s illegal to carry an unloaded and exposed firearm in public with the exception of a handgun. But it is legal for a person to transport an unloaded one in a vehicle.

Why the (*&^^% would you need a long gun (or even a short gun) in a Safeway if you aren’t planning to rob the place?

This is the diminutive phallus brigade in full show-off mode.

Facebook Frolics 0

A Council Bluffs, Iowa woman was arrested Tuesday after she posted a threat on Facebook that her son would “shoot up” his school.

If the woman’s statements to the press have any truth to them at all, she may well have reason to be angry at the school.

Popping off about popping caps was an infelicitous way to express it.

Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go 0

Merry Christmas.

Jobless claims climbed by 10,000 to 379,000 in the period ended Dec. 14, the most since the end of March, Labor Department data showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 48 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a decrease to 336,000. It’s best to focus on the four-week average during the holiday season to determine the underlying trend, a government spokesman said as the figures were released.

(snip)

The data tend to be volatile around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays as seasonal adjustment is difficult to calculate, the Labor Department spokesman said last week.

The four-week average of claims, a less-volatile measure than the weekly figure, climbed to 343,500, the highest in a month, from 330,250 in the prior week.

The number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits increased by 94,000 to 2.88 million in the week ended Dec. 7.

Cooch and the Cuckoos, The End 0

Fall of the last cuckoo (updated to reflect changes in the source):

Virginia’s ballyhooed attorney general recount came to an early end today when Republican candidate Mark Obenshain conceded the race to Democrat Mark Herring.

Watch for the exciting sequel, now in the planning stages: Unticketed and Unhinged! Return of the Cooch.

This is the first time in almost a generation that all three state-wide Democratic candidates–Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney-General–have won.

Compulsive Gamblers 0

The Inky reminds us that they are not just in casinos. They are also in three-piece suits.

A nugget:

It took five federal agencies three years to wade through the stalling tactics of banking lobbyists – including the 20,000 comments they filed – to come up with 963 pages of regulations with 2,826 footnotes that boil down to one admonition: Don’t make reckless bets with other people’s money.

(snip)

That it took so long to write the rule is an indication of the difficulty regulators face in getting the financial industry to not just admit its gambling problem, but do something about it.

‘Tis the Season 0

Celebrate the Prince of Peace. Come upside someone’s head.

Kristina Vindiola says a woman hit her outside the Wal-Mart on 91st Avenue and Thomas Road after she said “Happy Holidays.”

“The lady looked at me,” said Vindiola. “I thought she was going to put money in the kettle. She came up to me and said, ‘Do you believe in God?’ And she says, ‘You’re supposed to say Merry Christmas,’ and that’s when she hit me.”
